Skillet Barbecue Beef Sandwiches
Skillet barbecue beef sandwiches turn your dreams of getting dinner on the table in just 15 minutes into a reality! Piled high with caramelized onion and tender strips of deli cut roast beef bathed in barbecue sauce, these sandwiches are stress free way to get dinner done on time!
Barbecued beef is one of my favorite ways to stuff a sandwich bun.
Usually, it involves a beef roast that’s spent all day in the crockpot simmering in a rich sauce and steeped in juices until it’s falling apart and ready to melt in your mouth.
This though, assumes that when I put everything in the crockpot that morning, that I actually remembered to turn it on before I headed out the door.
So now, it’s dinner time and this dum dum still wants her barbecued beef.
What’s a gal to do?
She figures out how to whip up a different recipe for barbecue beef that’s made in a skillet on the stove top, and is ready in only 15 minutes.
These skillet barbecue beef sandwiches were one heck of a recovery!
Tender, thin strips of roast beef and sauteed onions, dripping with a smoky, sweet, semi-homemade barbecue sauce are piled high on soft sandwich buns.
Total satisfaction in no time at all!
Ingredients
To make these you’ll need:
- Onion– A small white onion thinly sliced
- Butter– To saute the onion in
- Barbecue sauce– I highly recommend a smoky barbecue sauce for this but use your favorite kind
- Lemon juice
- Chili sauce– Like Heinz. You can skip this if you don’t like a kick.
- Brown sugar– Packed tablespoons
- Worcestershire sauce
- Deli roast beef– Very thinly sliced and cut into strips. You could also use steak cut into very thin strips
- Sandwich buns
How to Make
Skillet barbecue beef sandwiches are so easy to make!
In a large skillet, melt the butter and then add in the onion and sauté until tender and they’re beginning to turn golden.
Next, whisk in the barbecue sauce, chili sauce, lemon juice, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce to the onions.
Bring the sauce to a simmer, stirring occasionally, over medium heat.
Then add the beef to the skillet and gently toss it to evenly coat the strips with sauce.
When the beef is heated through, take the skillet off the heat.
Pile the warm barbecue beef on sandwich buns and top it with your favorite toppings.
Serve and enjoy!
Storing Leftovers
If you don’t think you will use all of the beef in one meal, only put together the sandwiches you think you will eat.
Save the rest of the beef, separately from the sandwich buns, in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Reheat the beef on the stovetop until warmed through.

Tips and Tricks
- You could totally shortcut these barbecue beef sandwiches even more and skip the caramelized onions. Substitute them by sprinkling french fried onions on top of the finished beef on the sandwiches.
- The spice level is up to you. Choose a milder barbecue sauce if you don’t care for spicy food and omit the chili sauce, or for a spicier sandwich go for a spicy barbecue sauce and add extra chili sauce.
- You could also use the beef as a filling for grilled cheeses or to top baked potatoes if you are looking for some variety.

Great save! I think this might be a way to use up leftover steak, too. On that rare occasion when there IS left over steak!! lol! Happy Throwback Thursday!!
Mollie
Yes, for the leftover steak! Why don’t I ever have leftover steak? However, you can also use thinly sliced steak and just cook it to brown before continuing on with the sauce portion of the recipe, still a 20 minute meal, tops.
wanted a BBQ beef sandwich all day but didn’t make a roast for it. had roast beef on the fridge for lunch sandwiches and seen this recipe. was simple and fast . hit the spit for what I wanted . wasn’t no beef brisket but it still did the job. all in all I would eat it again.
