One of the best things about going to a steakhouse is the delicious sauces and spreads that finish off the main course.

One of my favorites is horseradish sauce. It just adds so much flavor.

This recipe gives you all that zippy horseradish flavor but tempers it with a creamy base of sour cream and whipping cream for a condiment that is smooth, decadent and a little sharp.

How to Make

Making this sauce is very easy especially if you have a stand mixer.

Just add everything to a medium mixing bowl except the whipping cream and whisk them together to combine them.

Once the ingredients have been combined, set them aside and then add the whipping cream to the bowl of a stand mixer.

Whip it on medium high speed until stiff peaks have formed.

When stiff peaks have formed, fold in the sour cream mixture and stir it just until everything is smooth.

Then refrigerate it until you are ready to use it.

What to Serve This Sauce With

This sauce goes really well with most grilled meats and many fish dishes. I like it with:

  • steak
  • pork chops
  • grilled chicken
  • fried fish
  • crab cakes
  • roast beef
  • prime rib

This sauce is even delicious with roasted root vegetables or stirred into potato salad. Yum!

How Long Will It Keep?

Horseradish itself doesn’t go bad, but the dairy products do.

Store this sauce in the fridge in a sealed container for up to a week.

I do not recommend freezing it though.

The whipped cream breaks down, separating, and it doesn’t come back together properly when stirred.

This sauce really is best when made fresh, although you can make it a couple of days ahead of time for less work come supper time.

Is The Flavor Very Strong Or Spicy?

Some people like a milder horseradish flavor instead of the bite of lots of horseradish.

If you prefer more mild sauce, just start with 1 tablespoon of horseradish and give the sauce a taste.

You can always add a little more to up the flavor.

The horseradish flavor will deepen slightly as the sauce sits and the flavors marry & meld.

  1. What a fun idea to whip the cream! I love the touch of white pepper, too. I think white pepper should be used more and I bet it goes great with the horseradish!!

Thanks for sharing at Fiesta Friday this week!
