There are some foods that are just pure comfort food, and grilled cheese is one of them.

While they are so simple, a few mistakes can take the delightful sandwich and make it sad.

Burning it, not using the right bread or enough butter, or the right cheese can all downgrade the experience from ultimate comfort food to meh.

But with this recipe, you’ll be making the best grilled cheese sandwich ever each and every time you make them.

And you’ll love eating them for lunch, serving them to your kids, or dunking them into a yummy bowl of tomato soup.

Ingredients

To make these, you’ll need:

  • Bread– Thick slices of white bread. I highly recommend sourdough for the best results and the crispiest sandwiches.
  • Cheese– Any sliced cheese you like however, steer clear of American cheese and go for cheese with more flavor. For the best flavor, use a blend of three cheeses.
  • Butter– Softened to room temperature for easy spreading. You could use mayonnaise instead of the butter if you prefer but do not use margarine or low fat mayo.

How to Make

Making the best grilled cheese sandwiches are so easy.

To do it, spread 1/2 a tablespoon of butter (or mayo) on two slices of bread.

Then, heat a skillet over medium low heat.

Add the buttered bread slices to the skillet with the buttered side down.

Layer 3-4 slices of cheese on top of each slice of bread, then top each with another slice of buttered bread.

Continue cooking until golden brown and the cheese starts to melt.

Then flip the sandwiches and continue cooking on the other side until golden brown and the cheese has melted.

Plate the crispy grilled cheese, then slice and serve!

Enjoy!

What cheese makes the best grilled cheese?

I recommend using a blend of 3 of the following cheeses:

  • cheddar
  • gouda
  • colby jack
  • munster
  • mozzarella
  • havarti

Is grilled cheese better with butter or oil?

Use butter!

Not only does it taste better but it will ensure that your sandwiches will be golden and crispy on the outside and won’t get soggy the way oil will.

Tips and Tricks

  • Lower heat is best for the perfect grilled cheese. You can obviously correct an undercooked one, but you can’t really fix a burnt version.
  • If making more than two sandwiches, cook in batches and repeat as many times as necessary.
  • Each grilled cheese sandwich shouldn’t take more than six minutes to cook
  • Do NOT use American cheese.
