Is there anything better than a nice warm roll fresh out of your oven?
I’m here to tell you that yes there is.
A Hawaiian roll fresh out of your oven.
Warm, fluffy, and full of flavor from pineapple juice and splash of vanilla.
These make perfect dinner rolls, slider rolls or even hamburger buns depending on what size you make them.
And they are made from easy to find ingredients that you may already have in your pantry!
What a treat!
Ingredients
To make these you’ll need:
- Pineapple juice– This is the primary liquid in the recipe instead of water or milk like you’d find in other bread recipes.
- Yeast– Instant dry yeast
- Sugar– Granulated
- Butter– Salted butter in this! Melt it!
- Vanilla– Real vanilla extract is better than imitation
- Eggs– 2 whole eggs plus an extra yolk
- Flour– Bread flour, which has a higher protein content than all purpose flour. This gives the rolls a chewier texture and a bit more structure.
How to Make
Homemade sweet Hawaiian rolls are a good recipe for a beginner bread maker.
To do it, add the pineapple juice to a microwave safe bowl and microwave until it is just warm to the touch.
Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar.
Then stir in the yeast and let it sit for 5 minutes.
The yeast should react with the juice and sugar and create a frothy top.
After the yeast blooms, whisk the remaining sugar, melted butter, vanilla and eggs and egg yolks into the juice mixture.
Stir in 3 cups of flour until it’s incorporated.
Then, stir in another cup of flour and stir.
Continue adding flour until the dough is no longer sticky.
Once the dough isn’t sticky, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until it doubles in size.
When the dough has risen line a large sheet pan with parchment paper, or grease two 9×13 inch pans.
Shape the dough into 24 rolls and place on the pan.
Let the rolls rise another 1 ½ hours or until they double in size again.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Mix the reserved egg white with 1 tablespoon of water and whisk to make an egg wash.
Brush the egg wash over the top of the rolls.
Bake for 20 minutes or until golden.
While the rolls are still warm brush with butter.
Serve warm and enjoy!
Storing Leftovers
Store leftovers in an airtight container on the counter for 2 to 3 days.
Serving Suggestions
These make an excellent side dish to main courses like:
- roast pork
- pork chops
- ham
- roast beef
You could also use them for barbecue chicken or pork sandwiches, and they make excellent sliders!
Tips and Tricks
- You don’t want the pineapple juice to be too hot. If it’s too hot, it will kill the yeast.
- Likewise, you don’t want the juice too cold. If it is too cold the yeast won’t activate.
- I find letting dough rise in a closed, off microwave or oven is the perfect warm environment.
