I am a big believer in using every possible thing that I can to make sure nothing goes to waste.

When I make a roast chicken, I use every last part to make a delicious homemade broth.

Not only does it make sure nothing goes to waste, it’s so much tastier than the sodium packed store bought kind.

It makes for delicious soups and stews, and it’s yummy & rich enough just to sip from a mug.

How to Use Bone Broth

There are so many uses for this!

Think of it as a substitute for store bought chicken broth or chicken stock and use it in soups, stews or casseroles the way you would stock.

But since it is so much yummier, you can also heat up a mug full of the bone broth and drink it as a snack or a soothing drink when you are feeling a bit under the weather.

Storing

This makes such a large amount of bone broth that I often store some in the fridge and freeze some.

To refrigerate, I let it cool and then ladle it into jars.

It will keep in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to a week.

To freeze it, will pour it into freezer safe zip locking bags.

It keeps in the freezer for about a year.

Tips and Tricks

  • I made the chicken and the bone broth on the same day from this slow cooker whole chicken recipe and used the leftover drippings in the broth. In fact, I just added the ingredients for the bone broth right on top of the chicken drippings in the slow cooker bowl.
  • You can vary the seasonings based on the flavors you want. Any of the herbs you’d find in poultry seasoning would taste good in this.
  • Want to make turkey bone broth after the holidays? Just sub the turkey carcass for the chicken carcass and follow the same method.
