They are a dippable snack or appetizer suited for any occasion and so easy to make with just a handful of ingredients.

What is the difference between beer battered and breaded?

Beer battered mushrooms are coated in a batter made from flour and beer and deep fried.

Breaded mushrooms are generally dredged in flour, followed by egg, and finally breadcrumbs before being baked or fried.

Ingredients

To make these you’ll need:

  • Oil– Canola oil to deep fry the mushrooms in
  • Flour– All purpose
  • Seasoned salt
  • Cold light beer– Use whatever kind you like to drink
  • Mushroom– Button cremini mushrooms you’ve cleaned
  • Optional garnish– Fresh minced parsley

How to Make 

Making beer battered mushrooms is pretty easy!

To start, heat the oil to 350 degrees in a large heavy bottom pot.

While the oil heats, whisk together the flour and seasoned salt in a medium mixing bowl.

Then whisk the beer into the batter until the batter is smooth.

Dip the mushrooms one at a time into the batter, using a fork to let the excess drain off.

Carefully deep fry the mushrooms in the hot oil in small batches for 3 to 5 minutes or until the batter is golden.

Remove the deep fried mushrooms from the pot and transfer them to a paper towel lined plate while you cook the rest.

Repeat until all the mushrooms are fried.

Sprinkle with minced parsley to garnish.

What kind of beer is the best to use for beer battering?

You want the beer to add a light flavor to the breading without being overwhelming.

Because of this, I recommend using a pale ale or a light beer and avoiding heavy bodied dark beers like Guinness and lagers.

Tips and Tricks

  • Clean the mushrooms well before battering them by wiping them off with a damp paper towel and then patting them dry.
  • Don’t overcrowd the oil. Putting too many mushrooms in at once will lower the temperature and result in uneven cooking.
  • Be careful when working with the hot oil. Gently place battered mushrooms into hot oil using a fork or spoon and avoid splashing which can burn.
  • I recommend using a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature of your oil, because oil that gets too hot can smoke and even catch fire.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups canola oil for frying
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1 cup cold light beer
  • 16 oz. button cremini mushrooms cleaned
  • Minced parsley for garnish optional

Instructions

  • In a large, heavy bottom pot, preheat the frying oil to 350 F.
    6 cups canola oil
  • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and seasoned salt. Add the beer and whisk again until the batter is smooth.
    1 cup all purpose flour, 2 teaspoons seasoned salt, 1 cup cold light beer
  • Dip the mushrooms one at a time into the batter and use a fork to drain the excess. Drop into the hot oil in batches, being careful not to over crowd, and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until golden brown and the mushrooms are tender.
    16 oz. button cremini mushrooms
  • Serve immediately with a sprinkle of parsley.
