Smoked Hot Dogs

Smoked hot dogs turn the classic barbecue food into a real treat! Seasoning and mustard or barbecue sauce coat the meat and compliment their smoky flavor for the best hot dog you’ll ever eat!

Smoking things is such an easy way to take a basic recipe or meal and kick it up a notch.

Take hot dogs for example.

Really yummy on their own.

But smoke them and add that extra layer of flavor?

Don’t mind if I do!

The result is hands down the best hot dog you’ll ever eat with minimal effort.

Ingredients

To make these you’ll need:

  • Hot dogs– Use a good quality hot dog. We love Ball Park Prime.
  • Yellow mustard– Or barbecue sauce if that’s more to your liking.
  • Barbecue rub– Your favorite variety.
  • Hot dog buns

How to Make

Making smoked hot dogs is almost as easy as making them on the grill.

To do it, just fill your smoker with your favorite wood chips and preheat it to 225.

Score the hot dogs on both sides with a SlotDog tool.

Put the scored hot dogs in an aluminum tin and top them with mustard and barbecue rub, making sure that the hot dogs are covered evenly in both.

Smoke the hot dogs for 40-45 minutes.

Add the hot dogs to buns and top with your favorite toppings.

Serve and enjoy!

Hot Dog Topping Ideas

One of my favorite ways to serve hot dogs is setting up a hot dog bar with tons of different toppings and these smoked hot dogs make a great main event!

Favorite toppings include:

  • yellow mustard
  • Smoked Ketchup
  • chili
  • cheddar cheese
  • chopped onions
  • relish

What wood chips should I use to smoke hot dogs?

I recommend using a variety of hard wood chips for this recipe like:

  • hickory
  • oak
  • maple
  • pecan
  • alder

Storing Leftovers

Store any leftover hot dogs in an airtight container or sealed ziplocking bag in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Tips and Tricks

  • Don’t have a SlotDog tool? You can use a sharp paring knife to cut x’s into both sides of the hot dogs to create a diamond pattern.
  • If you prefer a different kind of mustard you could use that instead of yellow mustard.
  • Quality hot dogs are key! Use whatever hot dog you think is the absolute best!

Ingredients

  • 8 quality hot dogs recommend Ball Park Prime
  • 4 tbsp yellow mustard or barbecue sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp barbecue rub
  • 8 hot dog buns

Instructions

  • Fill your smoker with your favorite wood chips, and preheat to 225°.
  • Score the hot dogs on both sides using a SlotDog tool. If you don't have one, you can also do this using a sharp paring knife to carefully cut x's into both sides of each hot dog to create a diamond pattern.
    8 quality hot dogs
  • Add the hot dogs to an aluminum tin and top with mustard, then rub in so that all the hot dogs are well coated all over. Sprinkle the rub evenly out over top.
    4 tbsp yellow mustard, 1/2 tbsp barbecue rub
  • Smoke for 40-45 minutes.
  • Carefully add the hot hot dogs to buns, and serve with desired toppings.
