My guys can’t get enough of hot dogs and baked beans.

Why not put them together into one hearty dish?

That’s exactly what these homemade beanie weenies are.

A hearty, easy dish of beans and dogs everyone will love.

What are beanie weenies?

Beanie weenies is a version of baked beans beans and hot dogs or franks and beans.

There is a popular premade brand called Beanee Weenies.

You can serve them on their own or as a side dish at a picnic or barbecue.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Olive oil
  • Hot dogs– I recommend using Nathan’s. Thinly slice them.
  • Sugar– Light brown sugar
  • Canned pork and beans– A 53 ounce can
  • Spices- Onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper
  • Condiments– Ketchup, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce
  • Vinegar– Apple cider vinegar

How to Make

This franks and beans recipe is so easy to make!

To do it, add the oil to a heavy bottomed pot set over medium heat.

When it’s hot add the sliced hot dogs to the pan.

Cook the hot dogs, stirring often, for 2 minutes or just until the edges are crispy and slightly caramelized.

Open the can of beans, and carefully pour off the excess liquid pooled at the top until you start to see the first beans.

At this point, pour the contents of the can into the pot.

Add the remaining ingredients to the pot, stirring to combine.

Bring the pot to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Let the mixture simmer for 5-8 minutes.

While it simmers, stir it every now and then.

Serve warm and enjoy!

Storing Leftovers

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Where are Beanie Weenies from?

Baked beans are an American classic that came about sometime in the 1800s.

No one is quite sure where or when people started combining hot dogs and baked beans but they started being sold as a canned good in the 1980s.

Tips and Tricks

  • The cayenne pepper is optional. Omit it if you don’t like things with a kick.
  • Use your favorite kind of hot dogs. We love Nathan’s but you can switch it out for whatever brand your family prefers.
  • Don’t skip simmering the beans after you add all the ingredients. It helps the sauce thicken up a bit and the flavors combine.

Other Baked Beans and Hot Dog Recipes

Homemade Beanie Weenies are a retro favorite my kids love.

Make them and enjoy a hearty, frugal dinner or side!

We love Bernie weenies!!! Your recipe is just like my own! I’m a mom of 3 boys age 14,10, 4… definitely got my hands full!! And they are the pickiest of eaters!!! But this recipe is the bomb!!! I just add Wooster while I’m browning the hotdogs and it gets such a nice crispy flavor!! Also, smoked paprika and a splash or two of the redneck lipstick bbq sauce!!! Great recipe!!!!
