Potlucks and parties seem to have two distinct seasons in my neck of the woods.

Most of the times the food between summer parties and colder weather football/holiday season shindigs is totally different.

But these Cuban style sliders are a hit either time of year.

They’re perfect for just this sort of thing.

The sliders are simple, made and baked all in one dish, and grab and go with the finished product.

Plus they require assembly, not any actual cooking, making them a solid choice for kitchen beginners.

And the results?

Well, you can’t go wrong with Hawaiian rolls are piled high with thinly sliced deli ham, a layer of melted cheesy Swiss cheese, and crisp dill pickles and slathered with a buttery onion Dijon spread.

Then they get baked to golden brown perfection.

It’s like a little bit of kitchen magic in every bite.

Storing

Sliders are best the day you make them as they tend to get soggy the longer they sit in the fridge.

However if you have any leftovers, store them in the fridge in an airtight container or right in the tightly wrapped baking dish for up to 3 days.

Reheat them in a hot oven until they are warm and the cheese has melted again.

Tips and Tricks

  • Want to take this from a Cuban style sandwich to a Cuban? Substitute pulled pork for the ham.
  • Don’t skip the resting time. It will help the sandwich fillings stay in the sandwich.
  • Make sure to leave the Hawaiian rolls in tact as a sheet when you slice them in half. Don’t pull the sheets apart until you serve.

Love these sliders !! They were a big hit at church ! I didn’t take any home ! I did play around with the cheese . I added shredded snaked bacon cheddar with the Swiss the first time I made them . The second time I used 4 kinds I cheese such as Swiss, sargento’s garlic&herb, tomato basil jack and Muenster cheese. I love cheese ! This will be a hit anywhere you take them ! Thank you for posting AJ

    1. Cheese is my love language, AJ! I agree you can’t really go wrong in that dept, and they’re still gonna be loved by all. The combo in the recipe is what designates it as ‘cuban’, but not essential.

Oh man was this yummy!!! Used sliced white cheddar and sliced garlic dills. Will definitely make these again. Thx AJ!

These were delicious! I added yellow mustard with the ham and cheese. Love making sandwiches this way!

    1. So glad you enjoyed them Crissy. Yellow mustard is a great idea!! I couldn’t agree more, sliders are so easy with less fuss and less mess.

  4. I haven’t made these yet, but I have some roast pork, with is an essential ingredient here in Tampa! Putting the rest of the ‘fixins’ on my shopping list for today!!

    1. Yes, pork is an essential element of any real Cubano sandwich. The Hubs hates it though, so if making a batch of this I omit it- but great point because there’s no reason other than preference not to have some on there :)

  5. Can these be made the day before and refrigerated? I have before with the recipe like this with butter, poppy seeds, etc. But wasn’t sure with the minced onion if it would be too strong after sitting all night on the bread 🤷🏼‍♀️ Super excited to try these! Thx!

    1. For the best results, I’d say assemble them the night before- cover & refrigerate. Then when you’re ready to bake, whip up the glaze and brush on at the last minute. For best flavor. Hope that helps & that you love them as much as we do!

Easy to make and a big hit at the party. It’s been requested of me to bring these to the next party! Absolutely loved it!

Curious, is taste affected if I make them the night before then cook the next day? Any tips to go with this?

Thank you for sharing such a great recipe.

    1. We prep these ahead of time often- the only thing I wait until just before baking on is the butter bath. Otherwise assemble them as instructed, place them in your baking dish, wrap it up nice & tight with cling wrap and refrigerate until ready to bake the next day.

Happy to hear they were a hit at your party!!

These were a hit for the AFC Championship party (Go Chiefs!)
I did brush some honey mustard on the ham layer, added pork, and I used refrigerated sandwich stuffer pickles so the pickle covered the entire sandwich. I also did a layer of cheese as the first and last layer. I didn’t have minced onion so I used onion powder – but definitely think the minced would be better.

  8. I prepped 2 batches of these for my Christmas open house but we had way too juch food so they didn’t get baked. Can they be frozen? They are fully prepared but without the butter/mustard topping.
