But swimming in oil, most fried chicken recipes are not exactly healthy even though they are delicious.
My air fryer fried chicken gives you all that yummy fried chicken taste and texture without all of the bad for you stuff that comes with traditional recipes.
Ingredients
To make this recipe you need:
- chicken
- buttermilk
- hot sauce
- flour
- seasoning- Old Bay and salt and pepper
- nonstick spray
How to Make
This recipe is very easy to make!
To do it, pat the chicken dry with a paper towel then liberally sprinkle them with salt and pepper and set the chicken aside.
Then whisk the hot sauce and milk together until they are combined.
Put the chicken into the bowl and press the chicken pieces down so it is covered with liquid.
Loosely cover the bowl with a dish towel and let the chicken sit for around half an hour.
Once the time has passed, add the flour and seasoning to a large ziplock bag.
Seal the bag and give it a shake to mix the ingredients together.
Then use one pair of tongs and add the chicken to the bag with the flour and the seasoning. Shake the bag to evenly coat the chicken.
Then use a separate pair of tongs to remove the coated chicken from the seasoned bag and transfer it onto a waiting sheet of parchment paper.
Repeat this process until all the chicken is coated.
Lightly spray the basket of your air fryer and the chicken with nonstick spray.
Then put the chicken in the basket of your air fryer so that it is side by side but not touching.
Air fryer the chicken at 390 degrees for 25-28 minutes or until the internal temperature reads 165.
Enjoy!
Storing Leftover Fried Chicken So It Stays Crispy
While it’s unlikely that you’ll have leftovers, you might find yourself with a few extra pieces of chicken.
If that’s the case you can store it in the fridge or in a freezer.
Whatever you don’t leave your fried chicken on a counter for storage.
It should not be left at room temperature for more than an hour.
To store it, let your chicken cool. Then wrap each piece of chicken individual in foil and put the chicken in a shallow airtight container or freezer bag.
Once your chicken is wrapped and sealed, store fried chicken in the refrigerator up to 5 days.
You can also freeze fried chicken for up to 12 months.
Reheating Fried Chicken
To reheat this air fryer chicken, you can pop it in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes.
You could also put it in your air fryer again and set the fryer to 375 and heat it until it is warmed through.
If you have frozen the chicken, let it thaw completely in the fridge prior to reheating.

Air Fryer Fried Chicken
Ingredients
- 4 bone in, skin on chicken pieces we used legs
- salt & pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 1/2 tbsp hot sauce
- 1 cup flour
- 2 tbsp old bay seasoning
- non stick cooking spray as needed
Instructions
- Pat the chicken pieces dry with a paper towel. Liberally salt & pepper, and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, add the milk and hot sauce. Whisk them together until evenly combined.
- Add the prepared chicken to the bowl, pressing them down so all the chicken is under the liquid. Cover the bowl with a loose dish towel, and let the chicken marinate for 20-30 minutes.
- To a large ziplocking bag add both the flour and old bay seasonings. Without spilling, use your hands to squish the contents together until the seasoning's mixed in with the flour.
- Working with one piece of chicken at a time, use tongs to place a piece of chicken into the bag. Carefully shake to evenly coat the chicken.
- Using a separate pair of tongs, remove the coated chicken from the seasoning bag and transfer it to a large piece of parchment paper.
- Repeat until all the chicken is coated and on the parchment paper.
- Lightly spray the basket of your air fryer with non stick cooking spray. Spritz the chicken lightly with cooking spray too.
- Transfer the chicken to the basket of your air fryer, so that it's side by side but not overlapping. This may mean you need to cook it into batches if you have a smaller air fryer.
- Cook the chicken at 390 degrees for 25-28 minutes, or until an internal temp thermometer reads 165°
Notes
- You could substitute chicken thighs, either bone in or skinless, boneless thighs.
- Don't skip patting the chicken dry with a paper towel. This will help you get crisp chicken.
- Make sure to check the chicken half way through cooking. If you notice any dry spots spray them with cooking spray at this time.
