Steak Egg & Cheese Bagel (McDonald’s Copycat)
Make your fast food fix at home, and take it to go, with these 15 minute steak egg and cheese bagel sandwiches. This McDonald’s copycat recipe features fluffy scrambled eggs, melted cheese, seasoned steak, and lightly caramelized onions between toasty buttered bagels.
I am totally unashamed in admitting my inability to have it all together in the morning.
My kids and I like to sleep until the last possible second, which often means breakfast is either something grab and go from home or swinging by the drive thru on the way to work and school.
Hitting up McDonald’s for four kids and myself on the regular can get pretty expensive though.
Especially when you consider our favorite item, their steak egg & cheese bagel, isn’t on the value menu.
Luckily the sons and I figured out how to make them at home.
Even better? They’re easy to whip up- even on busy mornings and in less time than it would take me to go through the drive thru line.
Ingredients Needed
To make this McDonald’s copycat recipe you’ll need:
- Bagels – Plain bagels, any brand. If they aren’t pre-sliced you’ll need to use a serrated bread knife to cut then in half.
- Butter – I use salted butter, but if you’re watching your sodium intake use unsalted.
- Onion – A small yellow onion, peeled & thinly sliced.
- Eggs – Four large eggs, beaten.
- Cream – You’ll only need one tablespoon- it gets added to the beaten egg and creates the fluffiest scrambled eggs.
- Steak – We use Steak-eze brand sirloin steaks, but any brand of steak umms or philly cheese steaks will work.
- Seasonings – A little Montreal steak seasoning and some Worcestershire sauce are used to season the steak.
- Cheese – Sliced American cheese, although you could substitute sliced cheddar if preferred.
How To Make
Getting a hot breakfast going in the mornings has always been a challenge, thankfully these copycat steak egg & cheese bagels are ready in about 15 minutes.
Start by lightly toasting your sliced bagels. You can use personal preference here as far as how ‘toasted’ is enough.
Once your bagels are done, spread 1/2 a tablespoon of butter evenly out over each half.
Sit the buttered bagels on two waiting plates, top each bottom bagel with a slice of cheese, and set them aside.
Place a medium sized skillet on the stove over medium heat. Add a tablespoon of butter to the skillet to melt.
It will melt quickly, so don’t walk away because it can also burn just as quickly.
When the butter’s melted, add the sliced onions to the skillet.
Using a spatula stir them so that all the onions get coated in the melted butter.
Sauté the onions, stirring often, just until they’ve softened and begun to brown then transfer them from the skillet to a waiting plate.
Add another tablespoon of butter to the hot skillet to melt.
Add the cream to the beaten eggs, and whisk together just until evenly combined.
Pour the eggs into the hot buttered skillet. They will begin cooking immediately.
Stir the eggs constantly, pulling them away from the bottom and edges of the pan, until they’re fully scrambled but not dried out.
Form the eggs into two piles, and transfer one to each waiting bottom bagel.
The heat from the eggs will begin to melt the cheese. Set them aside again.
Add the remaining pat of butter to the hot skillet, and once melted add the steaks to the skillet.
Sprinkle the steak seasoning evenly out over both steaks, followed by drizzling the Worcestershire sauce evenly over them.
Cook the steaks over medium heat, flipping them as needed, until cooked through.
To most closely resemble McDonald’s steak egg & cheese bagel, try to keep the steaks together as much as possible while cooking.
I recommend using two spatulas to carefully flip them to keep them mostly in their ‘patty’ form.
Once the steaks are done cooking, use your spatula to transfer them to their respective bagels.
Add half of the onions to each, spreading them out just a bit to cover.
Place the tops on the bagel sandwiches, and serve warm!
Serving Suggestions
Since we’re usually on the go in the mornings at the last minute, I wrap these in some parchment paper and take them to go.
If you’ve got time to sit down and eat a civilized breakfast, you can enjoy them by themselves or pair them with a side for a full meal.
I highly recommend a glass of cold orange juice and a hash brown patty on the side to recreate the full McDonald’s experience.
They also pair well with fresh fruit and home fries.
Storing
These sandwiches don’t store well once assembled.
The bagel tends to get soggy, and that just makes for a sad sandwich mess.
If you happen to have leftovers, they should be stored separately in air tight containers and refrigerated for up to 48 hours.
Toast new bagels when ready to enjoy.
If you want to make mornings easier, you can semi make these ahead of time.
Store everything separately in the refrigerator overnight, then assemble in the morning and microwave to heat through when ready to eat.
Can I Use Real Steak?
Absolutely!
You can slice it thin and cook it to order, or you could also use leftover steak and just slice it and warm it when assembling.
While not a true copycat, these breakfast bagel sandwiches will be incredibly delicious with actual steak.
What Happened To The Breakfast Sauce?
When McDonald’s breakfast bagels first debuted they were topped with a delectable breakfast ‘sauce’.
Sadly, the company discontinued the sauce completely years ago.
Now the steak egg & cheese bagel just uses buttered bagels without any kind of sauce. Still delicious, but not the same for everyone.
Luckily, it’s a very simple sauce and easy to recreate in minutes.
To make your own breakfast sauce you’ll need:
- 1/2 cup mayo
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon steak sauce
- 1 scant teaspoon dried dill
- dash of hot sauce (optional)
- salt & pepper, to taste
Add all of the ingredients to a bowl, whisk them together until evenly combined- and voila! You’ve made the infamous breakfast sauce recipe.
The sauce can be used right away, but will thicken when chilled.
Spread it on your bagel just before serving.
TIPS & TRICKS
- Once you add the butter to the skillet, you’ll need to work quickly- if you wait too long it will go from melted to burnt.
- While adding the cream to the eggs isn’t 100% necessary, I highly recommend it. Mixing a little cream into them yields the fluffiest scrambled eggs, which McDonald’s is also known for having.
- This breakfast sandwich recipe can easily be doubled or tripled to feed a family.
- Taking your breakfast bagel sandwiches to go? Wrap them in parchment paper. It will help keep them warm, while also catching any juices making it easy to eat and enjoy (without making a mess!) while in a hurry.

Nutrition
looks like a good recipe and seems like it should be pretty lose to the real thing. I am wondering what you might have ment about the sauce being discontinued though. I have traveled many years and many many miles. I won’t say I am a trucker but you get the idea. McDonald’s has a garlic flavored sauce for this sandwich. I am not sure it’s the same as it’s always been but it most certainly has a sauce on it.
Came here to find a full copycat recipe to make for my gf to keep in the freezer and left disappointed that there’s no sauce recipe-and yes, they still put the sauce on it
