This homemade poppy seed dressing recipe is an easy way to upgrade any salad. It’s so easy to make this creamy dressing and so much yummier than any you could buy that you’ll never go back to the storebought kind again!
One surefire way to get me to eat salad is homemade salad dressing.
It’s so much better than the lackluster kind you get from the store, and it’s easy to make!
When you try this poppyseed dressing recipe, you’ll understand how this turns even salad naysayers into salad fans!
What is poppyseed dressing made of?
It depends on the variety of poppyseed dressing.
Most are oil and vinegar based dressings with some seasonings and of course poppyseeds added in.
Others, like this creamy version, include mayonnaise to give it that body.
Ingredients
To make this you’ll need:
- Oil– Technically I used vegetable oil but you could substitute canola oil or olive oil if your prefer.
- Vinegar– Apple cider vinegar
- Mayonnaise– Real mayo and not mayonnaise style dressing or Miracle Whip
- Dijon Mustard– Don’t substitute a different variety. The flavor will change.
- Sugar– Granulated. To balance the acidity.
- Poppy Seeds
- Spices– Dried minced onion, salt, and black pepper
How to Make
Making this homemade poppyseed dressing recipe is so easy!
Just add all of the ingredients to a mixing bowl and whisk them together until they are well combined.
That’s it!
You’re ready to drizzle it on salads and enjoy!
Storing
Store in an airtight container or a mason jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks or so.
Can I freeze this dressing?
No, unfortunately this dressing does not freeze well.
What to Serve with Poppy Seed Dressing
I love this on big salads especially ones with fresh fruit in them.
It’s also delicious on fruit salads themselves or in place of mayonnaise in a chicken salad.
Tips and Tricks
- Don’t use regular mustard in place of Dijon. It turns the dressing an unpleasant color and has too strong of a flavor.
- Taste the dressing and adjust the seasonings to suit your tastes before using.
- Don’t want creamy poppy seed dressing? Skip the mayo! It will still be delicious!
- Shake or stir the dressing vigorously before each use so the seeds aren’t all on the bottom.
