Easy Chocolate Covered Red White And Blue Strawberries
Red, white and blue is everywhere in the Summer. Get in on the patriotic celebration with these festive white chocolate covered red white and blue strawberries! They’re an easy appetizer begging to be on your Summer dessert table!
Strawberries are a staple of Summer, especially in the South.
They’re also pretty much synonymous with summer celebrations- think Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Instead of doing two separate treats, I decided to combine them into a single finger-friendly dessert with these chocolate covered red white and blue strawberries.
Ingredients Needed
They’re easier than you’d think to throw together, which is pretty awesome considering how stunning they look as part of a dessert spread.
To make them you’ll need:
- Strawberries – try to pick out a clam shell with larger berries as they’re easier to work with. Also look for bright red, ripe berries- they will taste the sweetest, and really highlight the white chocolate coating.
- White Chocolate – I recommend using a premium white melting chocolate such as Ghirardelli’s melting wafers. These will yield a smoother texture and leave less room for error.
- Blue Sanding Sugar – This will yield the best color and adhere the best, but you could also use blue sprinkles or edible blue sparkles.
How To Make Edible Glitter Using Sugar
If you don’t want to buy dyed glitter, you can easily make your own with only a few household ingredients.
In a small mixing bowl, add some granulated sugar & a few drops of your desired food coloring.
For this recipe, we’re using blue food coloring.
Using a fork, whisk the sugar and food coloring together until it’s evenly combined and the sugar’s taken on a colored crystal-like quality.
Transfer the colored sugar to a flat saucer or plate. Set aside.
How To Make Glittered White Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Add whatever you’ve decided to use for the blue layer to a bowl. Set it aside.
Add the white chocolate to a microwave safe bowl and heat it in the microwave for two minute intervals, stirring in between, just until it’s completely melted and smooth.
Alternatively you could melt the white chocolate in a mini crockpot or in a double boiler on the stove top.
Holding the stem of a washed & dried ripe strawberry, dip it into the melted chocolate.
Not all the way though, just so it covers 2/3’s of the berry. You want the top layer of red to stay unblemished.
Working quickly, and carefully, roll the bottom third of the strawberry in the blue sugar turning to evenly coat.
Set the red white and blue strawberry on a wax paper lined counter top, or baking sheet, to allow it to set.
Repeat until all the strawberries are done.
Making With Kids
You may have to reheat your chocolate if this takes too long, especially if doing this recipe with kids.
If that’s the case, it may be better to use a small slow cooker for melting and keeping your chocolate smooth on the warm setting. But of course, be careful as the crock will be hot to touch!
Strawberries dipped in white chocolate, and blue sugar are a fun and easy dessert, and make a perfect patriotic candy for the 4th of July, or the 5th (you know for all the celebratory cookouts all weekend long).
It’s not too late to make a batch either, they’re totally last-minute friendly.
So whether it’s at some point this weekend, or at next year’s festivities, bring a special sweetness and a hail to the red, white and blue in celebration of our independence.
Hold on to the recipe though ….. Christmas is 174 days away and these are just as eye catching using green!
