Rotisserie chicken is a staple in this house.
We use one at least once a week.
Sometimes we have it as part of a chicken dinner and other times I repurpose the meat for another recipe.
This recipe gives you the same juicy flavor as a grocery store rotisserie chicken but at less cost.
Why make a rotisserie chicken at home?
Look, I know those precooked chickens are so convenient, but they are expensive.
I know, I know! You can buy one for just about 5 dollars depending on where you go.
But, you don’t get a lot of bang for your buck.
The grocery store rotisseries are small- under 2 pounds, which means you are spending more than 2.50 per pound.
You will spend half that per pound if you buy a whole chicken. And sometimes, you can find whole chickens for sale for even less, making it so much more budget friendly.
What kind of air fryer do I need to make rotisserie style chicken?
I am using a 5.3 liter air fryer. This is the one I recommend.
Ingredients
To make this you’ll need:
- Whole chicken– Use a whole chicken that is 5 pounds or smaller. A larger chicken will not work. It will be too big and too close to the heat element in your air fryer and will burn.
- Olive oil– Use extra virgin if you have it.
- Seasonings– Poultry seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, dried basil, dried thyme, and dried oregano.
How to Make
This so so easy to make!
To do it, unwrap your chicken, remove the giblet pouch from the cavity, and rinse the chicken thoroughly.
Then use paper towels to pat the chicken completely dry. Set aside on a clean cutting board.
Next, add all of the seasonings to a small bowl and use a fork to whisk them together until evenly incorporated.
Now, pour half the olive oil over the top of the chicken and use clean hands rub to it in all over, including under the wings and legs.
Flip the chicken over, pour the rest of the oil over top, and repeat the rub down.
Then, sprinkle half the seasoning blend out over the chicken, and gently rub it in getting the seasonings all over.
Flip the chicken, sprinkle with remaining seasonings, and repeat.
Liberally spray your air fryer basket with non stick cooking spray.
Then, add the prepared chicken to the sprayed basket, breast side down.
Cook the chicken for 50 minutes at 360°.
Open the air fryer basket, and carefully flip the hot chicken over using a pair of tongs so the breast side is facing up.
Return the chicken to the fryer and cook another 10-12 minutes.
Carefully transfer the rotisserie chicken to a clean cutting board.
Carve it and serve with your favorite sides.
What to Serve with
I love to serve this the first night as part of a traditional chicken dinner. Our favorite sides for roast chicken include:
Storing Leftovers
Store leftover rotisserie chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Can you freeze rotisserie chicken?
Yes! You can freeze this after you cook it.
To freeze it:
- Let it cool.
- Remove the chicken from the bone.
- Shred the chicken.
- Put it into freezer bags and seal.
You can put the freezer bags in the freezer for 3 to 6 months.
Tips and tricks
- I’ve found the easiest way to flip this is to insert a pair of tongs carefully into the cavity (going in on edge of butt side), and turning it end over end instead of side to side. This kept my skin intact without tearing.
- Be sure to get the skin as dry as you can for extra crispy skin.
- Make sure a meat thermometer reads 165 degrees F before carving your bird. That’s the safe temperature for fully cooked meat.
