Confession time.
I love Pop Tarts and could eat them every day.
They remind me of breakfasts on school mornings growing up and never fail to make me smile.
You’d think these nostalgic treats would be tough to make, but they aren’t!
Believe it or not, you can make your own homemade strawberry pop tarts right in your air fryer.
Ingredients
To make these you’ll need:
- Premade pie crust– The kind you find in the refrigerated section
- Strawberry jam or jelly– Of course, feel free to use your favorite flavor, but I’m going for classic here!
- Water– To seal the edges of the pastries together
- Glaze ingredients– Powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and rainbow sprinkles
How to Make
To make these air fryer strawberry pop tarts, start by prepping the crusts.
First, open and unroll the pie crust on a lightly floured cutting board or counter top and roll it out into a large rectangle.
Using a ravioli cutter, cut into 6 strips- then cut each strip into 3 equal pieces.
Working on one pop tart at a time, spread roughly a tablespoon of jam onto a pastry square.
Be careful to leave a clean edge of pastry on all sides so you can seal the edges.
Then run a wet finger or pastry brush around the clean edges of the pastry.
Seal the pop tart by laying another pastry square overtop and using your fingers to press the edges down and together.
Then, press down along the edges of the pastry with the tines of a fork.
Press the fork into the top of the pop tart several times to create holes for steam to escape.
Repeat until you have made all the pop tarts.
Then, lightly spray the basket of an air fryer with non stick cooking spray.
Add a couple pop tarts to the basket, making sure not to crowd the basket.
Cook at 350° for 8 minutes, or until golden brown and the dough’s cooked through.
Repeat in batches until all the pop tarts are done.
Transfer cooked pop tarts to a wire rack to cool completely.
Once the pop tarts are cool, whisk the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract together in a small bowl until evenly combined.
Spoon some of the glaze onto each pop tart and then top each with sprinkles.
Serve and enjoy!
Can I make these in the oven?
Yes!
If you don’t have an air fryer, assemble the pop tarts as instructed above.
Instead of putting them in the basket of an air fryer, line a cookie sheet with foil and spray it with nonstick spray.
Bake the pop tarts at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden and the crust is cooked through.
Storing Leftovers
Homemade pop tarts are best when they are fresh, but will keep for for up to 3 days in the fridge.
Can I freeze homemade pop tarts?
Yes!
If you leave the glaze off, you’ll be able to store these in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.
Let them thaw in the fridge overnight and then either pop them in your air fryer or oven to warm them through.
Tips and Tricks
- Use any variety of jam or jelly you want. Nutella is also a super yummy filling for homemade pop tarts!
- Don’t over crowd your fryer or they won’t cook properly. You may have to work in batches.
- Make sure you pierce the top of the pop tarts a few times so the steam can escape! Otherwise the pop tarts sort of puff up and the filling leaks out.
