Oriental Chicken Salad (Applebee’s Copycat)

Oriental chicken salad is an at home copycat of the Applebee’s classic. This spot on remake serves up the same medley of tangy dressing and crunchy veggies as the version you know and love.

We love going out to dinner, but with 4 kids, and boys with huge appetites at that, dinner out gets expensive.

So instead of going to a place like Applebee’s often, I am a huge fan of making copycat versions of their classics to enjoy at home.

For about the cost of one meal out, I can get 6 servings of this crunchy classic so we can all eat and enjoy without hurting my wallet.

And best of all, it’s so easy to make!

Ingredients

To make this chopped chicken salad, you’ll need:

  • Chicken– Sure you can use homemade chicken tenders or grilled chicken but make it easy and use frozen chicken tenders.
  • Dressing ingredients– Real mayonnaise, honey, dijon mustard, sesame oil, salt and pepper.
  • Veggies– Chopped romaine lettuce, thinly sliced purple cabbage and shredded carrots.
  • Crunchy toppings– Chow mein noodles and slivered almonds

How to Make

This salad is so easy to make!

To do it, heat the chicken tenders according to package directions.

While they are cooking, make the dressing by stirring together the mayo, honey, dijon mustard, sesame oil, salt, and pepper until well combined.

Refrigerate the dressing until ready to serve.

Then, in a large salad bowl, toss together the lettuce, cabbage and carrots.

Top the veggies with chow mein noodles and almonds.

Once the chicken tenders are finished cooking, cut them into bite sized pieces and add to the salad.

Toss with dressing and serve immediately.

Enjoy!

Can I make this ahead of time?

You can make elements of it ahead of time.

For example, you could make the dressing a day ahead of time and store it in the fridge in an airtight container.

However, I wouldn’t assemble the salad itself until you are ready to serve it.

It may get soggy if you do.

Storing Leftovers

I don’t recommend planning for leftovers of this salad. If you think you may have leftovers, try to only dress individual portions and store the dressing in a separate container in the fridge.

Tips and Tricks

  • Feel free to sub out the romaine for other lettuce if desired. Crunchier lettuces like iceberg work better than softer greens.
  • For extra flavor, you could toss a drained can of mandarin oranges into this salad. The restaurant version includes this.
  • Add a little heat to the dressing with a touch of sriracha.
