Homemade peanut butter is a simple pantry staple made with just a few basic ingredients and a blender or a food processor. The result is rich, nutty, more delicious version of the store bought staple that makes for the best pbj sandwiches and snacks.

There are some homemade staples that sound much harder to make than they actually are, and peanut butter is definitely one of them.

Once you see how quickly a handful of peanuts transforms into smooth, creamy peanut butter, you may wonder why you ever bought it from the store.

Making it yourself also gives you complete control over the ingredients, so you can adjust the salt, sweetness, and consistency to suit exactly what your family likes.

Plus, let’s talk about how good homemade peanut butter tastes!

It’s rich and more intensely peanut-y.

That rich flavor makes a simple sandwich into a total flavor treat.

Plus this version is nice and creamy, making it absolutely perfect for spreading on toast or crackers, stirring into oatmeal, or dipping apple slices.

Once you try this, you’ll never want to go bag to grocery store peanut butter again!

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Peanuts– I’m using roasted, unsalted peanuts.
  • Salt– Just a little
  • Oil– A neutral oil. Peanut oil is ideal for peanut butter but canola oil or vegetable oil will also work.

How to Make

Homemade peanut butter is really easy to make!

Storing

Let the peanut butter cool to room temperature before transferring the peanut butter to an airtight jar or container.

Refrigerate it for up to a month.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use roasted peanuts over raw peanuts for a deeper flavor.
  • For a twist, you could use honey roasted peanuts or sweeten it up with a tablespoon of honey, maple syrup, or sugar.
  • Be patient while you are blending. The peanuts will go through several stages from powdery crumbs to thick paste before getting creamy. Don’t stop too soon!
  • Add the oil sparingly. The peanuts have their own oils and that will separate from the solids as the peanut butter sits. The additional oil is just to help the peanut butter along.
  • While the peanut butter doesn’t get cooked or heated, the friction from the blender or food processor will cause it to warm up so you need to let it sit before transferring it for storage.
  • While you can enjoy homemade peanut butter in almost all the same ways you’d enjoy store bought peanut butter, some baked goods and candy recipes need store bought, not natural version peanut butter. Homemade peanut butter (and natural store bought peanut butter) will separate which is a problem in some baked goods and candies like peanut butter balls.
  • The peanut butter will separate as it sits. Give it a stir before each use.
