How To Make Homemade Creamy Peanut Butter

Homemade peanut butter is a simple pantry staple made with just a few basic ingredients and a blender or a food processor. The result is rich, nutty, more delicious version of the store bought staple that makes for the best pbj sandwiches and snacks.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups roasted unsalted peanuts
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon neutral flavored oil as needed

Instructions

  • In a high speed blender or food processor, add the peanuts and salt and blend on high until smooth.
4 cups roasted unsalted peanuts, ½ teaspoon salt
  • If the blender needs a bit of help getting past the powdery stage, add ½ teaspoon of oil at a time until it makes a smoother consistency.
    1 tablespoon neutral flavored oil
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 1 month

Notes

  • Use roasted peanuts over raw peanuts for a deeper flavor.
  • For a twist, you could use honey roasted peanuts or sweeten it up with a tablespoon of honey, maple syrup, or sugar.
  • Be patient while you are blending. The peanuts will go through several stages from powdery crumbs to thick paste before getting creamy. Don't stop too soon!
  • Add the oil sparingly. The peanuts have their own oils and that will separate from the solids as the peanut butter sits. The additional oil is just to help the peanut butter along.
  • While the peanut butter doesn't get cooked or heated, the friction from the blender or food processor will cause it to warm up so you need to let it sit before transferring it for storage.
  • While you can enjoy homemade peanut butter in almost all the same ways you'd enjoy store bought peanut butter, some baked goods and candy recipes need store bought, not natural version peanut butter. Homemade peanut butter (and natural store bought peanut butter) will separate which is a problem in some baked goods and candies like peanut butter balls.
  • The peanut butter will separate as it sits. Give it a stir before each use.
