Let’s be honest.

Gravy makes everything better.

By everything I mean chicken, turkey, roast beef, biscuits, mashed potatoes, and stuffing….

I’m sure I could think of uses for it too besides just eating it right off a spoon.

And this KFC copycat brown gravy is delicious enough that you might want to eat it right off a spoon.

I totally won’t judge if you do!

Ingredients

To make this, you’ll need:

ingredients needed for a batch of easy h0memade gravy

  • Butter– I recommend unsalted so you can control how salty your gravy is.
  • Flour– Regular all purpose flour.
  • Chicken bouillon powder– 1 tablespoon or 2 packets depending on what kind you use.
  • Spices– Garlic powder, dried parsley, and black pepper
  • Beef broth– Chicken broth will work in a pinch but it won’t be brown if you don’t use beef broth!

How to Make

To make this brown gravy, melt the butter in a large pot.

Once the butter is melted, whisk in the flour so it is the consistency of paste. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes or until the mixture is golden.

Next, stir in the bouillon powder, garlic powder, parsley, and pepper.

Slowly whisk in the beef broth a little at a time.

Mix it well after each addition.

Bring it to a simmer and allow to cook until desired thickness is reached.

Serve warm and enjoy!

Storing leftovers

Gravy separates if you store it too long in the fridge. Store it in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze it in a freezer safe container for a month.

How much gravy does this make?

This recipe yields 2 cups of gravy or 8 half cup servings.

Tips and tricks

  • Make sure to whisk the flour and the butter into a smooth paste and get all the lumps of flour out in the process. If you don’t the gravy will be lumpy.
  • This recipe is easy to double if you are serving a crowd.
  • The gravy will thicken more as it cools.

In all my 60 years, I have only made a successful gravy one time…and lost the recipe. But this was so much better!! I had made a pot roast using beef broth and and Lipton’s dry onion soup and dip mix(dry),so I used that when you said to use broth. I think the success was because I added the broth bit by bit like you said. Thank you! I’m pinning this in several boards so I don’t lose it!!!

PS) In case your readers need to know: I used King Arthur Measure for Measure gluten free flour and gluten free broth.

  2. Hi Meaghan. In the ingredients for the gravy, it says 1/4 flour. Does that mean 1/4 teaspoon, tablespoon or cup? Thanks!

  3. I just tried this for the first time, the flavor is good but extremely salty, is there a certain type of chicken bouillon powder I should use? Or do you think just using low sodium beef broth might help? I feel like it would have been great if it wasn’t so salty, I wanted to give it another shot.

    1. You could absolutely use a low sodium option. They also make salt free bouillon, which would then allow you to salt to taste after it’s come together.

  4. My husbands exact words were: this gravy is LEGIT!
It was very easy to make with ingredients always on hand.
Someone mentioned it was too salty- I used low sodium beef broth and unsalted butter and it was delicious.

    1. Yes, exactly why it’s my go to gravy recipe. Low sodium is what I’d recommend for anyone who’s watching their sodium intake or sensitive to it.

It is wonderful. I will never make another brown gravy for my family except for this one thank you so much for sharing.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. It’s the only brown gravy I ever make now too- unless of course I have drippings to use.

I have made this twice with the juices from the meat. My family loves it and it is so easy to make. I stopped buying gravy mix.

    1. I’ve never been able to master making gravy from scratch like my Southern Grandma tried so hard to teach me. It was gravy mixes for me for (an embarrassingly lot of) years. This delicious discovery helped me get my fix and kick the bland habit!

  7. hi I have a question for you, someone said they use drippings from their roast, how much drippings would you have to use equally to the store bought beef drippings?

I was in a pinch and this was quick and easy to make. It was a little salty for me, but I might have done a little more of the chicken bullion then I was supposed to that might be my fault overall great

  9. By far the best gravy recipe I’ve found!
Instead of beef broth, I used the juices and drippings from a beef pot roast I made this for.
Be sure to brown the butter and flour before putting the liquids in. The flavor will a bit lack if it’s not browned a bit.
