We love Chinese take out in our house.
But with 6 people, 5 of them being very hungry boys, take out adds up real fast.
So one of my favorite things to do is make take out recipes at home like this beef chow fun.
It’s a really yummy version of the classic dish that comes together in under an hour and feeds everyone.
Perfect for movie night or any night you just feel like adding some new flavors to your dinner table!
Ingredients
To make this you’ll need a set of ingredients for the beef, another for the sauce, and a third for the stir fry itself.
For the beef, you’ll need:
- Beef– Stir fry strips. You can normally find a package of them near the other beef in the refrigerated meat section.
- Soy sauce – You can use lite soy sauce if you are watching your sodium
- Corn starch
- Baking Soda
For the sauce you’ll need:
- Soy sauce– Again you could use lite if you are concerned about sodium
- Oyster sauce– You can find this in the Asian foods section of the grocery store or online here.
- Water– To thin the sauce a little
- Oil– A light neutral oil like canola oil
- Shaoxing wine– You can buy it online here or if you don’t want to buy it you can substitute mirin or cooking sherry
- Sesame oil– Just a little as it is very strong
- Ginger– Ground
And for the stir fry you’ll need:
- Oil– Light neutral oil like canola oil
- Onion– Sliced
- Wide rice noodles– Cooked according to package directions
- Scallions– Sliced into 2″ pieces
- Bean sprouts– You can use drained, canned bean sprouts
Once you’ve gathered all your ingredients you’re ready to begin!
How to Make

Then, heat a tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.
Cook the beef strips in the oil, stirring frequently, until cooked through.
Take the beef out of the pan and set it aside.
Add the remaining oil to pan.
Cook the sliced onion, stirring often, until the onion starts to soften or for about 2-3 minutes.
Add the noodles, scallions, bean sprouts and stir fry sauce to the pan.
Cook the mixture for an additional 3-4 minutes.
Stir the beef strips into the noodles and keep cooking until the beef chow fun is heated through and the sauce thickens slightly.

What is beef chow fun?
Beef chow fun is a Cantonese dish also known as beef ho fun.
It’s similar to chow mein but uses rice noodles instead of wheat noodles.
Storing Leftovers

Reheat them in the microwave until warmed through.
Tips and Tricks
- Do not use sesame oil for all the oil in the dish. Sesame oil is extremely strong flavored and will overpower the dish if you use it for everything.
- Make sure you have everything ready to go before you start to stir fry the dish. It moves very quickly once you start to stir fry it.
- Be careful not to over cook the noodles.
