Sloppy joes are a staple in this family.

But I need some variety in my life.

And rather than think of new things to make all the time that I’m not sure if my family will actually like, I’d rather just vary the flavors of classics like these Asian sloppy joes.

They have all the easy comfort but add a new spin with a delicious, Asian inspired sauce.

The sauce has sweet chili sauce, the umami of hoisin, tanginess from ketchup and nutty richness from sesame oil.

Plus, like the original, they are incredibly easy and come together in one pan in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

To make these you’ll need:

  • Ground beef– Lean ground beef won’t cook down as much or get as greasy.
  • Sweet chili sauce– This is different than sriracha. It’s only mildly spicy and has more of a balanced, garlicky flavor. Find it in the international foods aisle or online here.
  • Soy sauce– You can use light soy sauce if you are worried about it being too salty.
  • Ketchup
  • Hoisin sauce– Asian style barbecue sauce. This is also available in the international aisle or online here.
  • Sugar– Brown
  • Sesame oil– A little of this goes a long way! It’s also in the international aisle or online.
  • Seasoned rice vinegar– This is rice vinegar with sugar and salt. It’s normally in the international aisle or by the vinegar with the condiments. You can also buy it online here.
  • Spices– Minced dried onion, garlic powder, ground ginger, and pepper
  • For the sandwiches– Hamburger buns, sesame seeds for garnish, and thinly sliced cucumbers

How to Make

Asian sloppy joes are an easy, one skillet meal!

To make them cook and crumble the beef in a large skillet set over medium high heat until the meat’s completely brown.

Strain off the grease.

Turn the heat down to medium then stir the sauces and condiments into the skillet.

Cook for 1-2 minutes to give the sauce a chance to warm through and thicken slightly.

Take it off the heat.

Then build the sandwiches by spooning the sloppy joe mixture onto buns, followed by sliced cucumbers and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.

Serve immediately and enjoy!

Storing Leftovers

Store any leftover sloppy joe meat in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Reheat them in the microwave until warmed through.

I do not recommend storing leftover assembled sandwiches as they will get soggy.

Freezing

This meat also freezes really well.

Make it as instructed above and let it cool to room temperature.

Transfer the cooled meat to a freezer safe bag and freeze it for up to 3 months.

Just thaw it before it use overnight in the fridge and then reheat it in a skillet over medium heat, thinning the sauce with water if needed.

Tips and Tricks

  • Like the originals, this Asian sloppy joe meat saves and doubles really well. I often make a double batch to save half to serve over rice later on in the week.
  • Toast the buns before building your sandwiches to keep the sandwiches from getting soggy.
  • If the sauce seems thin, just let it simmer for an extra couple minutes to let it thicken.
  • Experiment with toppings! Other yummy ideas besides cucumbers would be coleslaw mix, green onions, or pickled red onions.
