Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 3 tbsp sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 packed tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp seasoned rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp minced dried onion
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • thinly sliced cucumber for serving
  • sesame seeds for garnish
  • 6 hamburger buns for serving

Instructions

  • Add the beef to a large skillet set over medium high heat. Cook and crumble until the meat's completely browned, then strain off the grease.
    1 lb ground beef
  • Reduce the heat to medium then add the remaining ingredients to the skillet and stir well until everything's evenly combined.
3 tbsp sweet chili sauce, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp ketchup, 1 tbsp hoisin sauce, 1 packed tbsp brown sugar, 1 tsp sesame oil, 1 tsp seasoned rice vinegar, 1 tsp minced dried onion, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/4 tsp ground ginger, 1/4 tsp pepper
  • Cook for 1-2 minutes, just until heated through and the sauce has thickened some. Remove from heat.
  • Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto buns, top with sliced cucumbers, then sprinkle on some sesame seeds.
thinly sliced cucumber, sesame seeds, 6 hamburger buns
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Like the originals, this Asian sloppy joe meat saves and doubles really well. I often make a double batch to save half to serve over rice later on in the week.
  • Toast the buns before building your sandwiches to keep the sandwiches from getting soggy.
  • If the sauce seems thin, just let it simmer for an extra couple minutes to let it thicken.
  • Experiment with toppings! Other yummy ideas besides cucumbers would be coleslaw mix, green onions, or pickled red onions.
