Yes I know it’s still hot as the face of the sun outside, but before we know it the leaves will turn and gasp- dare I say- the holidays will be here?

And that means it’s prime pie season.

Oh yes.

This pie season try switching it up but don’t go too crazy!

Apple butter pie is chock full of the warming fall spices you love with a rich, pumpkin pie like texture.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Apple butter– You can use homemade  Apple Butter or your favorite store or farm stand bought kind.
  • Evaporated milk– Make sure you aren’t using condensed milk.
  • Brown sugar– Light or dark.
  • Eggs
  • Spices- Ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract
  • Pie crust– It’s totally fine to short cut this with store bought pie crust. You could use a homemade pie crust if you want, but it’s not a requirement.
  • Toppings– Whipped cream and nutmeg for serving

How to Make

This pie is so easy it practically makes itself.

To do it, preheat the oven to 350.

When the filling is smooth and well combined, pour the filling into a pie crust that you have gently pressed down over a pie plate.

What does apple butter pie taste like?

Apple butter pie is very apple flavored and has so much of the warming fall flavors.

Because apple butter itself is intensely apple flavored and well spiced, the pie has these flavors in a rich custard like filling.

Storing

Let the pie cool for at least two hours and then wrap it in plastic wrap.

Store it in the fridge for 4 to 5 days.

Tips and Tricks

  • It helps the eggs incorporate better into the filling if you let them come to room temperature first.
  • Wondering how to tell if your pie is done? The center should be set. It may have a little wobble but not look liquidy at all.
  • This pie is fantastic either warm like apple pie or chilled like pumpkin pie.
  • It’s the perfect pie for people wanting something traditional but don’t like pumpkin!
