This post and recipe was created for #HalloweenTreatsWeek! I was sent samples by some of the sponsor companies but as always opinions are 100% mine.

As soon as October rolls around, I am all about the witchy vibes and a certain movie featuring three ancient witches taking on the 20th century.

That cult classic gets a lot of air time in this house. And what better thing to make for my first annual viewing of the best witch movie around than a witch hat cheese ball?

If you’ve been reading my site for awhile, you know I adore any chance to make a good seasonal cheese ball and this one is no different.

It’s a delicious, cream cheese based spread that’s perfect for serving as a snack to accompany the movie or as an appetizer for any Halloween party.

Ingredients

To make this, you’ll need:

  • Cream cheese– Use full fat cream cheese for best results and let it soften before you use it.
  • Butter– Go for salted butter here and let it soften.
  • Sundried tomatoes– The kind packed in oil work better than the dried ones in a bag. Dice them and pat them dry.
  • Italian seasoning– Store bought or make your own.
  • Mozzarella cheese– Use the pre shredded kind and save yourself some work.
  • Blue corn tortilla chips– Crush them and use the crumbs to cover the outside of the hat and give it the spooky black color.
  • Green pepper rings– Slice them into 1″ pieces and use them to embellish the hat.

How to Make

Part of why I love cheese balls so much is just how easy they are to throw together.

To do it, add all of the ingredients except the crushed chips and sliced green peppers to a mixing bowl. Then, whip them together using a hand mixer.

Once the ingredients are well combined, cover the mixing bowl tightly with cling wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.

When you have refrigerated it for 2 hours, crush the chips and put them in a shallow bowl or dish.

Roll one quarter of cream cheese mixture into a ball. Flatten the ball out between a sheet of wax or parchment paper into a wide disk shape for the brim of the hat.

Coat the cream cheese disk in the crushed chips, pressing them in as necessary to cover and stick to the disk. Once you’ve covered the brim, set it on your desired serving platter.

Cover the serving platter in cling wrap and set aside. Form the remaining three quarters of the cream cheese mixture into a fat log shape and wrap it in plastic wrap to seal. Refrigerate both pieces for another hour.

After an hour, take the serving tray out of the fridge and unwrap it. Set it aside.

While the larger log is still wrapped, sculpt it into a form that resembles the top half of a witches hat. When you are happy with the shape, carefully unwrap the top of the hat and roll it in crushed chips.

Press the chips in as needed to make them stick. Flatten the bottom as needed and set it on top of the center of the brim.

Using the green pepper slices, add them around the base of the hate cone to form a hat band that also hides where they meet.

Serve immediately with dipping options of your choosing. Enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

  • If you want to make it ahead of time, cover it again in plastic wrap after you’ve assembled the hat and refrigerate it for up to 2 hours. Keep in mind it will need to thaw and come to room temp for at least 30 minutes beforehand to soften and become spreadable.
  • Don’t have blue corn chips? Poppy seeds will also work
  • Sliced olives (green or black), or even sliced carrots, or different colored pepper pieces will all work to make a cute edible hat band.
  • Want to make it for Thanksgiving instead of Halloween? Add a tiny square pretzel piece ‘buckle’ to your hat band and give it a more uniform pilgrim shape when forming the hat portion.
  • Our favorite dippers include pretzels, crackers, and veggie sticks.
