Mmm. Chicken, and waffles.

Two seemingly unrelated things, but such a classic, delicious combination.

The sons, yet again, were skeptical.

Four identical sets of arched eyebrows as I got out just 3 ingredients.

When, oh when, will they learn to trust me in the kitchen?!

Despite their kitchen trust issues, the sons followed the super simple recipe all by themselves.

Each son, in turn, took one tentative bite, and then proceeded to scarf them down like squirrels packing away food for winter.

There was even a brief skirmish over the last two and who deserved them MOST. A chicken and waffle combo may have sounded weird to the picky Sons, but they all agreed UNANIMOUSLY (might I point out this almost never happens!), that these little suckers are finger-lickin’ good.

Chicken and waffles…. really?!

Yes, really.

I realize depending on where you are from you might not have grown up with this combination, but pairing fried chicken with slightly sweet waffles and a drizzle of maple syrup is a serious thing in many parts of the country.

It’s a staple in southern soul food and even the Pennsylvania Dutch are on board and have a version of it that they serve up for breakfast and brunch.

And honestly, why shouldn’t this combo be a thing? Fluffy waffles, slightly spicy, savory chicken and sweet syrup? Yes please!

Ingredients

My shortcut take on the classic breakfast requires only 3 ingredients:

  • Mini waffles– I always use frozen waffles for this, no need to make your own though you certainly could. Avoid any of the flavored varieties (blueberry, cinnamon, chocolate) in favor of plain and cook them according to the directions on the box.
  • Chicken– You don’t have to make homemade fried chicken but you could make your own tenders if you want. I shortcut with store bought chicken tenders cooked according to the directions on the package.
  • Maple syrup– This is the time to use real maple syrup, not imitation.

You’ll also need toothpicks to help hold the sliders together.

How to Make

These breakfast sliders are so easy that my boys could make this by themselves even when they were younger.

To do it, cut the cooked chicken tenders in half and break your toasted waffles apart.

Then, just sandwich one piece of chicken between two cooked waffles and secure it with a toothpick.

When all the tenders have been ‘sandwiched’, drizzle them with maple syrup and serve warm.

Storing Leftovers

I don’t recommend making more than what you think you will eat since the sandwiches will get sort of soggy stored together.

However, you can store leftover chicken tenders for up to 3 days in an airtight container in the fridge.

Reheat them in the oven or even in your air fryer for maximum crispiness.

Tips and Tricks

  • The maple syrup is key. Do not use the imitation stuff but look for a bottle that says real maple syrup on the label.
  • You could turn these into a full size sandwich with regular size toaster waffles and using 2 to 3 whole tenders.
  • Use your favorite brands for the chicken and the waffles.
  • As great as they are for breakfast, these sliders also make perfect finger food for a party appetizer or a light lunch.
