How To Make
Making a smoked green bean casserole is super easy, and other than the cooking method almost identical to the standard recipe.
Start by adding the drained green beans, condensed soup, all seasonings, and 1 1/3 cups fried onions to a disposable 9×13 inch aluminum pan.
Stir everything together until it’s all evenly combined, then spread the green bean mixture out in an even layer in the pan.
Smoke uncovered at 350F for thirty minutes.
Carefully remove the hot dish from the oven, and sprinkle the remaining fried onions evenly out overtop of the dish. Return the casserole to the smoker and continue smoking for another 15 minutes- just until the casserole’s hot and bubbling and the onions on top have crisped nicely.
Serve warm & enjoy!
What To Serve With Smoked Green Bean Casserole?
This creamy smoked vegetable casserole pairs perfectly with pretty much any main meat entree.
For a delicious holiday dinner, we recommend serving it alongside one of these options:
If you want to go the non smoked entree route, it would also pair perfectly with our crockpot glazed ham.
Storing
Leftover green bean casserole can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
The crispy onions will soften as it sits, so it’s best to reheat it in the oven to crisp them back up.
Unfortunately green bean casserole does not freeze well.
Can I Use Fresh Green Beans?
Yes, green bean casserole is delicious with fresh green beans.
Before using them as instructed in the recipe, you’ll want to snap the beans then boil them for 6-8 minutes. Once they’re nice and tender, drain off the water and use them in the recipe as instructed.
Can I Make It Ahead Of Time?
Yes. This casserole can be made up to two days in advance, but omit the onions and only add them in just ahead of baking.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and bake as instructed.
What’re The Best Wood Chips To Use?
We recommend using oak or maple wood chips because of their sweet, but subtle smoky flavor which compliments the dish nicely.
However, you can ultimately use whatever variety of wood chips you have on hand or prefer.
TIPS & TRICKS
- Since this casserole is heavy I recommend doubling up on the pans to give it more stability when hot and removing from the smoker.
- Can be made in the oven with a dash of liquid smoke mixed in to give it that same smoked flavor.
- Give it a gourmet spin by substituting homemade french fried onions on top. However, skip mixing them in the casserole and just use them on top.
