One of the sons favorite candies are those Red Hot cinnamon candies.

They love things with a little spice to them so it’s no surprise.

And since they love them so much it’s easy to see why they love these spicy sweet candied apples.

Red Hot cinnamon apples create candied apples by stewing apple slices in sugar, water, and cinnamon candy.

The result is a vibrant red apple dish with a bold flavor.

You’ll be making it all fall long!

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Apples– Washed, peeled, cored and sliced. I recommend using Granny Smith apples for this recipe. If you don’t like Granny Smith apples, just make sure whatever variety you use is a good cooking one.
  • Water and sugar– Equal parts of water and granulated sugar to create a cooking liquid
  • Red Hot Candy – Can’t find it? Use cinnamon imperials.

How to Make

Making Red Hot apples is pretty easy.

To do it, whisk together the water and sugar in a skillet set over medium heat, stirring until the sugar’s dissolved.

Once the sugar dissolves, stir in the sliced apples and candy.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to medium low so it is just simmering.

Let it simmer, stirring often, until the apples have reached your desired level of tenderness.

Remove the skillet from heat and let the apples cool.

Serve warm and enjoy!

Are Red Hots still around?

Yes!

You can still enjoy this old fashioned candy, though sometimes it will be sold as Cinnamon Imperials.

Serving suggestions

There are so many ways to enjoy these Red Hot cinnamon apples.

You can serve them on their own as a snack, spooned over pancakes or waffles as part of brunch, or even over pork chops or roast chicken.

And don’t forget dessert!

If you want to enjoy them as a dessert, our favorite is to spoon it over a thick slice of pound cake, and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Yum!

Storing leftovers

Store leftovers in an airtight container or jar in the fridge for up to a week.

Tips and Tricks

  • The apples don’t have to be sliced, they can be cut into rings, chunks, etc.
  • If you do want to slice the apples, I recommend using an apple slicer to core and slice the apples first. Then cut each slice in half.
  • Don’t worry if the apples don’t appear very red at first. They will turn redder the longer it cools.
  • You can serve these warm or chilled.
