If youโve ever gone to bake and realized youโre out of brown sugar, this recipe is about to save the day.
Now I don’t know about you, but outside of the holiday season when I am baking all the cookies, I don’t regularly add brown sugar to my shopping list.
But I almost always have granulated sugar and molasses on hand since they are both ingredients I use often.

And if you have those two things in your kitchen then you can have homemade brown sugar in just minutes.
Itโs an easy solution that keeps you from running back to the store or changing your plans when you have forgotten you’re plum out of brown sugar.
Ingredients

To make this you only need two ingredients:
- Granulated Sugar– Plain old, white sugar.
- Molasses– Unsulphured
How to Make
Making homemade brown sugar is so easy!
Just put the sugar and the molasses in the food processor and process it on high for 1 minute.
Take half the sugar out of the food processor and put it in a bowl.

Blend the remaining half on high for another minute or until no major lumps of molasses are left.
Take the sugar out of the food processor and set it in a second, empty bowl.

Put the first batch of sugar back into the food processor and blend that batch for a minute or until it doesn’t have any molasses lumps left.

When it’s lump free transfer the blended sugar to the bowl with the rest of the sugar.
Use in recipes that call for brown sugar or store for later.

Storing
Store homemade brown sugar in an airtight container on the kitchen counter for up to 2 months.
If you want, you can store it with a food safe moisture absorber to reduce clumping.
Do not freeze it.

Tips and Tricks
- Unsulphured molasses is the regular dark molasses you find in grocery stores.
- You can increase or decrease the recipe as needed just make sure you keep the ratio of sugar to molasses the same. So if you wanted to make only 1.5 cups of brown sugar, reduce the molasses to 1/8 cup. If you wanted to make 6 cups, then you’d use 1/2 cup of molasses and so on.
- There may be molasses lumps in your brown sugar and that’s ok. It won’t hurt anything or change the outcome of whatever you are making. If you don’t want them there though, just keep blending them until they are gone.
