Learn how to make homemade bread crumbs for those times when you didn’t realize you were out of them and need them for dinner, or for those times when you want to use up some extra sliced bread. All you need is a few slices of bread and you are on your way to making this pantry staple.

As hard as I try to be organized and efficient with my groceries, it does happen from time to time that I forget I’ve run out of bread crumbs for a recipe I am making.
And sometimes, my family just doesn’t go through sliced bread as fast I’d expect and I don’t like to waste.
Learning how to make homemade bread crumbs saves the day in both of these situations.
Making your own bread crumbs at home is simple, requires no fancy ingredients, and helps cut down on waste at the same time.

They have a mild, slightly toasty flavor that works with just about anything, which makes them perfect for everything from breading chicken to topping casseroles.
You can also customize them depending on what you need, whether that’s fine crumbs for coating or larger pieces for a little extra texture.
It’s a pretty sweet way to use up bread that’s past its prime or save your dinner from disaster when you find you don’t have any on hand.

Ingredients
To make these you’ll need:
- Bread– Just 10-12 slices of white bread. That’s it. It’s ok if the bread is past its peak.
How to Make
Making homemade bread crumbs is so easy!

Just arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, making sure they don’t overlap.

Bake the bread slices at 250 degrees F for 50-60 minutes or until the bread is lightly golden brown and very dry.
Don’t be surprised if the bread doesn’t look visibly toasted on top because the bottoms will have become a gorgeous golden brown and the whole slice will have dried out.

Take the pan out of the oven and let the bread cool completely.

Break the cooled bread up into pieces, then add it to the bowl of a food processor fitted with the blade attachment.
Pulse it until it turns into fine crumbs.

Storing
Store in an airtight container on the counter for up to 1 month.
You can also transfer it to a freezer safe container and freeze them for up to 6 months.

Tips and Tricks
- While this recipe is written with white bread, you can use this method for any variety of store bought sliced bread. You can also do it with very thinly sliced bakery bread.
