We love going out to Japanese steakhouses.
In part for the hibachi, but let’s talk about the dipping sauces that come with the meals.
Normally you see a ginger dipping sauce and a pink, thicker dipping sauce, called yum yum sauce that’s so good for shrimp and veggies.
Our homemade yum yum sauce recipe tastes just like the sauce from the hibachi restaurants.
And it’s quick and easy to make so you can enjoy it whenever you’d like!
What is yum yum sauce?
Yum yum sauce is a tangy sauce that’s a combination of mayonnaise, ketchup or tomato paste, vinegar, and seasonings.
Often times, you’ll see it at a Japanese steakhouse as a dipping sauce for shrimp.
Ingredients
To make this you’ll need:
- Mayonnaise– Real full fat mayonnaise and not Miracle Whip or mayonnaise style dressing
- Ketchup
- Sugar– White sugar
- Seasonings– Paprika and garlic powder
- Seasoned rice vinegar– You can find this in the international foods aisle at most grocery stores or buy it online here.
- Water– As needed to thin the sauce to your desired consistency
How to Make
Making homemade yum yum sauce is so easy!
To do it, just whisk all of the ingredients except for the water together in a medium mixing bowl.
Once everything is combined, whisk the water into the sauce a teaspoon at a time until the sauce is smooth.
Add more water, if needed, to thin the sauce to your desired consistency.
Cover the yum yum sauce and let it chill for 1-2 hours in the refrigerator before serving.
Enjoy!
What to Serve Yum Yum Sauce With
Yum yum sauce is a yummy condiment for almost anything!
It’s delicious with:
- grilled meats
- shrimp
- teriyaki style noodles
- burgers
- fries
- veggies
Storing
Store homemade yum yum sauce in an airtight container like a mason jar in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Tips and Tricks
- Add the water a little bit at a time so you are sure the sauce will be the right consistency. Adding too much at once can lead to sauce that is too thin.
- Give the sauce a taste before serving and adjust the seasonings as needed.
- Let the sauce rest in the fridge. It needs the time for all the flavors to meld.
