Homemade Bisquick Recipe
This homemade Bisquick recipe will let you make all your favorites from pancakes and waffles to casseroles. Only 4 ingredients and you can make your own version of this pantry staple!
It’s not often that I panic.
But when I run out of Bisquick and don’t realize it until I need it for something I am making, it’s definitely caused some serious stress.
That’s a thing of the past though since I have discovered this homemade Bisquick recipe.
With only 4 ingredients that are staples in my house, I am never out of luck even if I am out of Bisquick.
This homemade substitute comes together quick and easily so you’ll never have to wonder what you can use if you don’t have Bisquick.
Is Bisquick just flour and baking powder?
Almost!
There’s a little more to it.
But this baking mix is primarily flour, cut with a fat, a leavening agent, and salt.
Ingredients
To make this you’ll need:
- Flour– All purpose
- Fat– Shortening
- Baking powder– Not baking soda
- Salt
How to Make
To make this homemade Bisquick recipe, just whisk all the ingredients except for the shortening together in the bowl of a stand mixer.
Then cut the shortening into little pieces and add it to the flour mixture.
Fit the stand mixer with the whisk attachment and mix the flour mixture on medium to high speed until the shortening is combined into the flour.
The homemade Bisquick is ready when you can’t even tell the shortening is there.
Use it immediately in your favorite recipes or store it in an airtight container in the fridge.
How to Store Homemade Bisquick
Store homemade Bisquick in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 months.
Do not store it on the counter as the shortening will go bad in as little as a week.
Can I freeze homemade Bisquick?
I have not tried freezing homemade Bisquick because I suspect freezing and thawing it would affect the texture.
Tips and Tricks
- If you have a mixing bowl guard, make sure you use it when you are mixing the Bisquick. The recipe is primarily dry ingredients and has a tendency to make a mess if you don’t!
- For more flavor, you can substitute cold (though slightly warmer than the refrigerator) unsalted butter.
- You can use this recipe as 1:1 substitute for Bisquick in any recipe!

- 3 Cups All Purpose Flour
- 3 1/2 tbsp shortening
- 1 1/2 tbsp Baking Powder
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
