What is naan bread?

Naan is a traditional flat bread in Indian cuisine.

The leavened bread is normally baked in the oven or fried.

It has a crispy exterior and soft chewy interior.

Often, like in this version, you’ll see naan served with other flavors like garlic.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need a set of ingredients for the naan itself and another set for the garlic butter.

For the naan you’ll need:

  • Milk– Heat the milk so it is warm but not hot.
  • Yeast– Active dry yeast
  • Sugar– Granulated
  • Flour– All purpose
  • Salt
  • Yogurt– Make sure you are using plain, unflavored yogurt and not flavored.
  • Oil– Vegetable oil
  • Garlic– Grated, or pressed, fresh garlic
  • Water– For kneading

For the garlic butter you’ll need:

  • Butter– Melt it first.
  • Herbs– Chopped cilantro or coriander leaves. Want even more flavor? Add other herbs like fresh parsley or basil to the butter.
  • Garlic– Finely chopped fresh garlic

How to Make Naan in the Air Fryer

To make garlic naan in the air fryer, you’ll start by proofing the yeast and making the dough.

Whisk warm milk, active dry yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar together in a bowl.

Cover the mixture and let it to sit for 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes or so, the mixture should be frothy on top.

Set this aside.

Then in another bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, plain yogurt, oil, and garlic.

When this is combined, add the activated yeast mixture.

Then knead everything together adding 3 to 4 tablespoons of water or however much you need to create a soft, smooth dough.

Rub some oil on top of the dough and cover it with plastic wrap.

Put the wrapped dough in warm place for at least 2 hours to let it rise and roughly double in size.

The dough should double in size after resting for 2 hours.

After 2 hours, remove the dough onto a clean surface and divide it into 8 equal dough balls.

Do I flip naan while air frying it?

No!

Do not turn the naan over while it’s cooking.

Cooking on both sides makes the naan hard.

Storing

While the naan is best eaten fresh, you can store leftovers in an airtight container in your fridge for 3 days.

Can I freeze naan?

Yes!

To freeze naan, let it cool and then place it in ziplocking freezer bags.

Seal the bags and freeze for up to 2 months.

Tips and Tricks

  • The milk should be just warm to the touch but not hot or it will kill the yeast.
  • If the yeast mixture doesn’t get frothy after 5 minutes, start over with fresh yeast.•
  • You can use a food processor to mix the dough for a quicker and more consistent result but be careful not to overmix the dough or it will be tough and chewy.
  • Don’t roll the naan too thin, or it will become too crispy and lose its soft texture.
  • Brushing the naan with the garlic butter before cooking it infuses it with extra flavor.
  • Preheat the air fryer before cooking to ensure the naan cooks evenly and gets that golden-brown color on top.
