Are muddy buddies and puppy chow the same thing?
Yes muddy buddies and puppy chow are one and the same.
Muddy buddies were originally called puppy chow because some people thought the treat looked a little bit like kibble.
And in parts of the Midwest, the folks still use that name.
But, the good people of Chex, rebranded the snack to muddy buddies to make them more appealing to people who might not want to eat puppy food.
You may also hear this snack called reindeer chow or monkey munch.
So technically this treat would also be s’mores puppy chow or s’mores monkey munch, etc.
Ingredients
To make this you’ll need:

- Chocolate– Milk chocolate bars. You’ll use part of it to melt into the peanut butter coating and chop some up for the snack mix itself.
- Butter– Unsalted
- Vanilla extract
- Peanut butter– Creamy
- Rice square cereal– Like rice Chex
- Powdered sugar– Aka confectioner’s sugar
- Graham crackers– Broken into 1/2″ pieces
- Marshmallows– Mini work best
How to Make
This s’mores muddy buddies recipe is so easy to make!
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat and stir in 1 and 1/3 cup of chocolate, the peanut butter, and the vanilla extract until everything is smooth and fully melted.

Put the cereal in a large bowl or gallon sized ziplocking bag.
Pour the chocolate peanut butter mixture over the cereal.
Seal the bag.

Give the bag a good shake until the peanut butter mixture coats everything evenly.

Add the powdered sugar to the bag and seal it before giving the bag another good shake until the sugar coats the cereal pieces.

Pour the muddy buddies into a serving bowl and stir in the remaining chopped chocolate bar, graham cracker pieces, and marshmallows.
Enjoy!

Storing
Store s’mores buddies in an ziplocking bag or sealed container on the counter for up to a week.

Tips and Tricks
- Be careful not to overheat the chocolate peanut butter mixture. The chocolate will burn and get clumpy if you cook it too long. You want to pull it off the heat as soon as it is smooth.
- This makes for a yummy party favor or gift if you package smaller portions in pretty treat bags or boxes.
- If you are making this in warm weather, store them in a cool place like the fridge so the chocolate coating doesn’t melt.
