Homemade Barbecue Rub
Homemade barbecue rub adds tons of flavor into just about any grilled or smoked meat! With a simple blend of spices, you’ll never go back to using storebought rubs again.
I normally have a jar of barbecue spice rub in my pantry.
We do a lot of grilling and smoker cooking after all.
Well, not too long ago, I found the bottle tragically empty when we were getting ready to grill.
But I didn’t let a little hurdle like no store bought rub stand in my way.
No.
I made my own homemade barbecue rub out of spices I had in my pantry.
And, folks, I’m so glad I gave it a go.
Because the resulting barbecue rub was *chef’s kiss* perfection.
And one I use time and time again instead of buying a prepared kind from the store.
Why make your own homemade barbecue rub?
There are a few reasons!
As I’ve already told you, necessity and not realizing you don’t have any in your pantry before making a recipe that calls for it.
But more importantly, making your own homemade barbecue rub lets you customize it exactly to your liking while avoiding added sodium and chemicals.
This rub is mild but you could customize the spices to add more zip if your prefer or add some brown sugar for a more traditional sweet background.
Ingredients
To make this you’ll need:
- Paprika– Regular paprika or use smoked paprika for an extra smoky background
- Coarse sea salt– You could use a different variety of salt but it will change the flavor profile and I would recommend still using something like kosher salt or another variety of sea salt
- Coarse black pepper– Again you could use a different variety of pepper but I would recommend freshly cracked black pepper
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
