Sometimes pizza night gets a little too predictable.

Don’t get me wrong we love ordering a hot pizza loaded with all of our favorite toppings.

But sometimes, especially if we’ve been having a lot of pizza lately, we change things up and order a stromboli.

One of our favorite varieties is a ham and cheese stromboli.

And I’ve come up with a super easy recipe that lets you skip the pizzeria and make it right at home instead.

What is a stromboli?

A stromboli is pizza dough rolled around toppings- normally meat and cheese- and baked in the oven to golden brown perfection.

It’s often served with a side of pizza sauce for dipping.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Pizza dough– Yes, you can use homemade pizza dough if you’d like but the recipe calls for store bought dough. You can find the pizza dough in the refrigerated section of the grocery store generally near the deli.
  • Spices– Garlic powder and onion powder
  • Cheese– We use shredded sharp cheddar but you could use shredded Swiss or mozzarella. Whatever you prefer!
  • Ham– Thinly sliced deli ham
  • Egg– Beaten

How to Make

This ham and cheese stromboli is a snap to make!

To do it, line a large cutting board with a sheet of parchment paper.

Add the pizza dough to it, and roll it out into a roughly 8×12″ rectangle.

Season the dough with the garlic and onion powder.

Sprinkle half the cheese evenly over the seasoned dough, leaving a roughly 1″ border on 3 sides of the dough, and a 1 1/2″ border on one of the two longer sides.

Then, top the cheese with the ham and sprinkle the remaining cheese evenly out overtop, leaving that border of plain dough.

Brush the beaten egg around the border.

Set aside the rest of the beaten egg.

Starting at the 1″ (shorter) side of the long ends of the rectangle, rough the dough up like a jelly roll as tightly as you can- until the whole thing has been rolled into a nice long loaf.

Press in the egg washed border, pinching to seal, and lay the stromboli seam side down scooting it into the middle of the parchment paper.

Then pinch the ends together to seal, and then fold them under the stromboli.

Slide a rimmed baking sheet under the parchment paper.

Then brush the rest of the egg wash evenly out over the outside of the stromboli.

Cut 3-4 sideways shallow slits in the top of the stromboli using a sharp knife.

Bake at 400° for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown on the outside and the dough inside the stromboli is cooked through.

Carefully remove the stromboli from the oven, then let it rest for 10 full minutes.

Cut into slices, and serve warm with your favorite dipping options.

What to Dip Stromboli Into

Most pizza places serve stromboli with a side of pizza sauce or marinara sauce.

Some will serve other dipping sauces depending on the type of stromboli.

Storing Leftovers

Wrap leftover stromboli tightly in foil and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Reheat it in the oven until warmed through.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can use a can of refrigerated pizza dough instead, if you’d prefer. It can be easier to roll out if you aren’t familiar with working with actual dough. Make sure it’s regular and not thin crust, and keep the measurements the same when rolling it out.
  • If you’re worried about the dough sticking, you can lightly flour the cutting board and prepare the dough on there instead, transferring it to the parchment paper on the baking sheet.
  • Don’t skip slitting the dough before baking. This allows steam to escape during baking, and ensures the dough cooks through properly on the inside.
