Cauldron Cakes (Harry Potter Recipe)

Cauldron cakes are perfect for Harry Potter fans or any wizard or witch who wants a magical treats. A homemade brownie base gets decorated with homemade icing to look like cauldrons. Spooky and sweet!

Being a Muggle can be less than wizarding.

I want a magical world.

If I can’t have a magical, wizarding world, I can at least make magical, wizarding treats like these cauldron cakes.

If you’ve ever dreamed of snacking like a Hogwarts student, these cakes are your ticket to Platform 9¾.

They feature homemade chocolate brownies baked in mini muffin tins for the shape and then decorated to look like cauldrons with homemade icing.

Perfect for Potter fans or just as spooktacular fall treat!

Ingredients

To make these you’ll need a set of ingredients for the brownies and one for the icing.

For the brownies you’ll need:

  • Chocolate– Semi sweet chocolate chips or semi sweet chopped baking chocolate
  • Oil– A neutral oil like canola oil
  • Sugar– Both brown sugar and granulated sugar
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla– Real vanilla extract has better flavor than imitation
  • Salt– To balance the sweet
  • Flour– All purpose
  • Mini chocolate chips

And for the frosting you’ll need:

  • Butter– Unsalted and softened to room temperature
  • Sugar– Powdered
  • Heavy cream– Don’t substitute a lower fat product
  • Vanilla– Real vanilla extract will taste better than imitation
  • Cocoa powder
  • Food coloring and melted chocolate– Optional for decorating

How to Make

Making cauldron brownies is a fun activity to get younger Harry Potter fans involved in!

To do it melt the chocolate in the microwave, microwaving it in a microwave safe bowl in 30 second increments.

Stir the chocolate after each increment, until melted and smooth.

Set aside the melted chocolate.

Then whisk together the oil, brown sugar, and sugar until smooth.

Stir in the melted chocolate.

Then beat in the egg, vanilla, and salt.

Fold in the flour just until no dry streaks remain.

Then fold in the mini chocolate chips.

Scoop the mixture evenly between the 24 cavities in a mini muffin pan you’ve sprayed with nonstick spray.

Bake them in a 350 degree oven for 15-18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let them cool for at least 20 minutes before running a butter knife around the edges to release them from the pan.

Once the brownies are cool make the icing by beating the butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and 1 tablespoon of cream together with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth.

Divide the mixture in half.

Mix in the cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon of cream, adding additional cream as needed for consistency.

Scoop the chocolate frosting into a piping bag or a ziplocking bag with one end snipped off.

Divide the other half in half again.

Dye one half one color like purple and the other half another color like green.

Put each color frosting in it’s own piping bag.

Pipe a ring of chocolate frosting along the top of each brownie.

Use the colors to pipe little spots in the center, set aside.

Pipe U shaped “handles” for the cauldrons.

Chill them in the fridge to set for 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes, push into the sides of each cauldron.

Serve and enjoy!

Storing 

Put any leftover cauldron cakes in an airtight container in the fridge and store them for up to a week.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can shortcut this by using box brownie mix instead of homemade brownies. 
  • Make sure the brownies are completely cool before frosting them or the frosting will melt off the brownies.
  • You can add sprinkles or even candy eyeballs for a more spooky, witchy vibe to the brownies.

Ingredients

For The Brownies

  • 8 oz semi sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate (about 2 cups)
  • cup neutral oil like canola oil or vegetable oil
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • cup flour
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips

For The Frosting

  • ½ cup butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons heavy cream divided
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • Food coloring
  • Melted chocolate optional

Instructions

To Make The Brownies

  • Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease a 24 count mini muffin pan with cooking spray; set aside.
  • In a microwave safe bowl, microwave the chocolate in 30 second increments, stirring after each, until melted and smooth; set aside.

  • Add the egg and vanilla and salt and mix well.

  • Add the flour and mix until no dry streaks remain. Add the mini chocolate chips and mix.
    ⅔ cup flour, ½ cup mini chocolate chips
  • Divide the mixture evenly between the 24 cavities in the muffin pan, then bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow to cool for 20 minutes before loosening with a butter knife and removing from the pan.

To Make The Frosting

  • In a large bowl, beat the butter, icing sugar and 1 tablespoon of cream, and 1 teaspoon vanilla on medium speed until smooth.
    ½ cup butter, 2 cups powdered sugar, 2-3 tablespoons heavy cream, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Divide the mixture in half, to one half add the cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon of cream and mix, add additional cream as needed for desired consistency.
    3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • To the other half, divide evenly between two small bowls and use two different colors of food coloring to tint each bowl. I used purple and green but any colors work.

  • Pipe a ring of chocolate frosting along the top of each brownie, then use the colors to pipe little spots in the center, set aside.
  • Use a piping bag with a very small hole to pipe U shaped “handles” for the cauldrons. Place into the fridge to set for 10 minutes, then remove and push into the sides of each cauldron.

Notes
