No fancy donut pan needed.
Just 5 minutes and a few ingredients and you are on your way to absolute breakfast heaven, my friends.
Ingredients
To make these you need:
- Canola oil– You need canola or another light, neutral oil to fry the biscuit dough in.
- Bacon– Make sure to cook it crisp and crumble it. You can do this ahead of time.
- Buttermilk biscuits– Get the large 48 ounce can found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store.
- Powdered sugar– Will sweeten the glaze. Make sure you sift it first.
- Unsalted butter– Brown the butter by cooking it over medium low heat until the butter is a light brown color and has a nutty smell.
- Maple syrup– Use real maple syrup and not artificial syrup for best flavor.
- Milk– will thin the glaze.
- Hot Fudge sauce or chocolate syrup– For drizzling over the donuts
How to Make
Let’s break this down into a few main steps:
- Making the donut fries
- Preparing the glaze
- Assembling the finished fries
Making the Donut Fries
To make the donut fries, start by heating two inches of canola oil in a large skillet over medium heat to 350 degrees.
Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temp.
While the oil heats, remove the biscuits from container and press them into flattened, wider circles.
Then cut them into strips lengthwise.
Now, using your hands, roll each cutting into a long string, about the thickness of a pencil.
Cut the string in half if it gets too long.
When the dough is rolled and the oil is ready, slowly drop the biscuits strings into the oil.
Let them cook for about 15-20 seconds on each side until the dough has turned a golden brown.
Then, use a pair of tongs to remove the ‘donut’ from the skillet and set on some paper towels to drain off the excess oil.
When finished you are finished deep frying the biscuits, leave your candy thermometer in the oil until it is completely cooled.
When cooled it will be safe to dispose of the oil.
How to Make The Glaze
To make the maple glaze, start by sifting the powdered sugar.
This will make the glaze nice and smooth. Set it aside.
Then, melt the butter in a small pot.
Once melted, stir continuously until it turns a golden brown.
Immediately remove the pot from heat once it turns golden brown.
Now, pour the browned butter, maple syrup, and milk over the sifted powdered sugar and vigorously whisk it all together until it’s smooth.
To Assemble
Now it’s time together to put together this breakfast indulgence.
If using Hot Fudge sauce, heat it briefly in the microwave to make it easier to drizzle over the fries.
Now put a bottom layer of doughnut fries on a plate and drizzle maple glaze and chocolate syrup over-top of them.
Sprinkle with some of the crumbled bacon.
Repeat for as many layers as you desire and enjoy.
Storing leftovers
There likely won’t be leftovers but if there are, you can store them covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Reheat in a warm oven until they are warmed through.
Tips and Tricks
- Use a candy thermometer to get the oil to the right temperature.
- Make sure to let the oil cool all the way prior to disposing it.
- To make the maple glaze, sifting the sugar isn’t absolutely necessary but it will make the glaze extra smooth.
