Air Fryer Hushpuppies
Air fryer hushpuppies are a lighter version of the classic Southern side. The savory cornmeal dumplings get air fried for a crunchy exterior and fluffy interior. Perfect for serving alongside all your favorites!
Southern food is comfort food to the max.
And it’s most obvious with dishes like hushpuppies.
Little deep fried golden brown cornmeal biscuit of goodness.
Super comforting, super delicious, and normally super deep fried.
But with the air fryer you can enjoy a lighter version of the classic side.
All the same great flavor, but less oil.
What are hushpuppies?
Hushpuppies are small round cornmeal biscuits.
These savory cornmeal fritters are generally deep fried in oil and served as a side for seafood dishes.
Our version uses the same batter a traditional hushpuppy would use but is air fried instead.
Ingredients
To make these you’ll need:
- Cornmeal
- Flour – All purpose
- Baking powder– For leavening
- Sugar– Granulated
- Spices– Salt, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder
- Buttermilk– Don’t have any? You can make your own by stirring together a cup of milk with a teaspoon of white vinegar or lemon juice.
- Egg
- Butter– Melted
- Scallion– Minced
- Cooking spray
How to Make
Making air fryer hushpuppies is pretty easy.
Start by making the batter, whisking together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder in a large bowl.
In a separate bowl whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and melted butter.
Then pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until they are just combined.
Fold in the minced scallion.
Preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees.
Use a small cookie scoop to scoop dough into the hot air fryer.
Spray the tops of the hushpuppy balls with cooking spray.
Air fry the hushpuppies for 10 minutes, flipping once halfway through and spraying the bottom with cooking spray.
Serve warm, garnished with green onions if desired.
Enjoy!
Storing Leftovers
Hushpuppies are best enjoyed fresh, but if you have leftovers store them in a ziplocking bag or airtight container in the fridge for up to a couple days.
Reheat them in the air fryer to crisp them back up.
Tips and Tricks
- Don’t over mix the batter. You want all the ingredients just combined. Overmixing will lead to really dense hushpuppies.
- You can adjust the spices to suit your tastes.
- Buttermilk is a must for this! You need the acid to make the hushpuppies tender.
