This post and recipe was created for #HalloweenTreatsWeek! I was sent samples by some of the sponsor companies but as always opinions are 100% mine.

Happy Halloween!

Let’s celebrate this spooky time of the year with some fun holiday themed drinks that the kids will love.

That’s right!

These pretty layered drinks are non alcoholic so you can serve them to your kids. If you dare!

Kids will love these colorful concoctions that look like an evil science experiment as a Halloween treat.

Plus, for any of you homeschoolers out there, you could make these as a real science experiment about density since that’s how the layered effect works.

See, I got you covered on so many levels!

The Science Behind getting Layers in Drinks

You wondering why the layers in this multicolor drink stay separate and don’t blend together?

The answer? Science.

I’m not kidding!

The secret to getting the drink to layer nicely is using different premade drinks with varied sugar content.

Whichever drink has the least amount of sugar will be the least dense and will make the top layer.

The one with the moderate amount of sugar will be the middle layer.

And the highest sugar beverage? That’s the bottom layer.

And that’s the basis of these colorful layered drinks.

Well that, and Density!

Ingredients

To put together these creepy drinks, you need:

  • black writing or icing gel
  • green sprinkles
  • ice
  • A yellow or green drink that has about 40 grams of sugar like Mountain Dew
  • An orange drink with about 20 grams of sugar like Powerade
  • A purple drink with zero grams of sugar

How to Make

Making these is easy and something the kids can help with.

To start, spread the black writing gel around the rim of a glass and coat the icing gel with sprinkles.

Then fill the glass to the top with ice.

Now, pour the highest sugar drink (yellow or green) into the bottom third of the glass.

Carefully fill the next third up with the medium sugar orange drink.

Finish by carefully pouring the purple drink to the top of the glass.

That’s it!

Don’t stir and enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

  • Make sure there is a roughly 20 gram sugar difference between drinks in equal servings to get the best layers.
  • Slowly pouring to the point of drizzling will help keep the layers from mixing.
  • Don’t stir to prevent the colors from mixing.
  • Have fun with the glasses you use! Jars, beakers or other creative glasses would be fun.
