My family adores hot dogs.

Pretty sure, if allowed, two of my four children would eat them everyday and possibly, quite happily, turn into one.

These oven baked hot dogs quickly became my best hot-doggy friend because this mama gets tired of boring old dogs.

And these are anything but!

Instead of a hot dog on a limp bun, I’m now into crunchy sandwich territory, and it’s heavenly.

They are loaded with toppings and have the most satisfying outer crunch that protects their delicious insides.

You will seriously never want to eat them any other way ever again!

Ingredients

To make these you’ll need:

over head image showing the measured ingredients needed to make over baked hot dogs

  • Hot dogs and hot dog buns– Use your favorite brand.
  • Chili– 1 can of your favorite store brand, or homemade hot dog chili– or better yet use leftover homemade chili
  • Toppings– diced onion, cheddar cheese, mayo, stone ground mustard, dill relish

How to Make

Making the best chili dogs you have ever tasted is pretty easy!

an open hot dog bun spread with mayonnaise, mustard, and relish

To do it, line the inside of hot dog buns with mayonnaise and mustard.

Then, add the relish to the buns.

Now stick the hot dogs inside the buns and squeeze the stuffed buns into a 9×13 baking pan.

Then top everything with chili, diced onion, and cheese.

Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Enjoy!

Storing Leftovers

I don’t recommend storing leftovers. The bread will get soggy and they will lose their satisfying crunch.

Tips and Tricks

  • Customize the toppings to suit your tastes. Hate onions or relish? Omit it.
  • But, trust me on the mayo. The mayo lends a rich buttery quality to the buns that is fantastic, and keeps the insides from drying out while the outer bun toasts.
  • This is a knife and fork recipe because it creates a messy situation you won’t want to hand hold. But trust me! It’s so worth it!

    1. We love them, not only because they’re a great way to change up on of our fav classic- but bc they’re just that unbelievably good (and EASY).

These hot dogs were A-MAZING!!? Thank you so much for this recipe that gave life to an otherwise quick but boring dinner. Grilled or oven baked will be our only methods, i’ll never boil another weiner!!! Popped them in the oven, showered, and dinner was DONE!

  2. WOW is all I can say. Made these up last night for our Movie Night at home. I LOVE hot dogs as does my Hubby. Speaking of him, he HATES mayo so I hid the fact it is used in this recipe. He didn’t have a clue, he ate 3 of them. MMMMM I, a small eater, ate 2. Used my homemade dog chili. This morning we each had one for breakfast. TO DIE FOR!!!! Thank you for the recipe. CHEERS, CC

These chili dogs are great! My family loves chili dogs and prefer not to eat plain hot dogs at all. I usually toast the bun separately, etc…
These can be put together ahead of time, but it’s so easy to assemble. I admit I didn’t use the mayo and mustard inside. My family really likes to squirt it over the top. I cooked as directed then pulled the foil off and broiled them for three minutes. Delicious! I’ll never make them any other way again. They aren’t soggy, they’re perfectly toasted buns full of deliciousness! We had three of 8 left over and they’ve all been claimed for breakfast. Thank you!

We love these chili dogs. This is the best way to make them and eat them. We don’t put anything mayo or mustard inside. We like to put our condiments all over the top at the table. We have these at least once a month and we will never go back to the old way.

After trying this recipe is good. I was impressed how the bun remained crispy while everything else was soft. To me, the biggest advantage to using this would be you can do several at one time. Overall nice recipe but nothing special as far as taste. Thanks for recipe.

I’ve made these a few times already and the fam loves them. I’ve got them in the oven right now. Best part is you prep them and can do other things while they’re in the oven. Win-Win!

  5. Sorry, I really like hotdogs with the works, but just looking at how hard the hands tried not to destroy the one handled during plating in the video, these look like a nightmare to eat for something that can potentially be a nightmare to eat when properly put together. Most (store bought) buns aren’t close to strong enough to take this kind of abuse.

It’s also not like hotdogs are so hard to make that you really have to make what amounts to a casserole out of the whole process. Waiting 40ish minutes for something that shouldn’t take more than 10mins isn’t really easier -it’s a whole lot of extra steps just to waste time.

    1. To each their own! The buns do ‘crisp up’ on the outside making them sturdy enough to hold their filling. It is extra steps for enjoying a hotdog, but the flavors are so good it’s totally worth it to us.

    2. I used the “fancy” hot dog buns. Nature’s own brioche style. They were fantastic. Every chili dog I’ve ever eaten in my life was messy. Just gotta use a fork!

    3. I scooped them out with a spatula, and we ate them with a fork, so it wasn’t any trouble at all for us. Our regular buns held up great, and the fact that it’s casserole style is a bonus to busy people. Maybe you should try it…

Make. These. These were really easy to throw together and serve for a party . It saves from there being a line for chili dog assembly. I put the cold canned chili in a bag and cut out the corner to pipe it on there. I put jalapenos and bacon bits on some, for my spicy food eaters. These were really delicous and a big hit with everyone. I would also imagine that you could prep these ahead of time and then pull them out and throw in the oven. Thanks for this. It’s a keeper!

Really looked forward to trying these. Applying the condiments first made the bun soggy. Was very disappointed. Will try again, putting mustard atop hot dog next time, no mayo.

  8. I cook for 40 men in a homeless shelter. This will be used next time chili cheese dogs are on the menu. Thank you

Good floor. Good idea. But, they were very messy and we ate them with a knife and fork. My crew was not a fan of the soggy-ish buns but overall, for the cook, it was easy and with fruit and carrots it made for a festive July 4th dinner 😊 thank you.

    1. I’d worry sitting for so long would make the buns soggy to the point they wouldn’t come back even when baked.
