These crispy little bites are everything you love about jalapeño poppers, but cleverly tucked into a mini fried egg roll shell.
They’re creamy, they’re cheesy, bacon-y, and spicy with just the right amount of crunch.
These mini jalapeno popper egg rolls are great party appetizers, and they’re also great grub for game day.
And they are a snack we can all agree that we love!
Afterall how can you go wrong with jalapeno popper filling tucked into a wonton and fried to perfection?
Obviously the answer is you can’t!
Ingredients
To make these you’ll need:
- Cream cheese– Softened to room temperature
- Sharp cheddar cheese– Shredded
- Jalapeno peppers– Seeded and diced
- Garlic powder
- Green onions– Finely sliced
- Bacon– Cooked crispy and crumbled
- Wonton wrappers
- Canola oil– For frying
How to Make
These jalapeno popper egg rolls are easier than you think to make!
Start by heating the oil to 350 degrees in a large skillet or pot.
While the oil comes to temperature, stir together the cream cheese, cheddar, jalapeño peppers, garlic powder, green onions, and bacon until evenly combined.
Then, place each wonton wrapper diagonally (like a diamond) and add 1 tablespoon of filling.
Brush a little bit of water on the edge of the wrapper and fold the wrapper in half, pinching it to seal.
Fold the sides in and roll the egg roll to make sure it is completely sealed.
Carefully drop each egg roll into the hot oil for about 3 minutes, or until they are brown and crispy.
Remove the fried egg rolls to paper towels to drain.
Let them rest about 5 minutes before serving.
Enjoy!
Storing Leftovers
Store leftovers in an airtight container or a ziplocking bag in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheat them in a hot oven until warmed through so they get crunchy again.
Can I freeze jalapeno popper egg rolls?
These fried egg rolls freeze beautifully!
To freeze them, prepare the egg rolls as instructed and lay them on a wax paper covered baking sheet (seam side down) until they all have been stuffed and rolled.
Then, place the baking sheet in the freezer for 30 minutes to an hour.
Once the egg rolls have been mostly frozen, remove them from the freezer and place them inside a large ziplocking freezer bag.
Seal the bag tightly, squeezing out any excess air as you do to prevent freezer burn.
They will keep for 2-3 months stored in the freezer.
When you’re ready to enjoy them, heat the oil according to the instructions and cook the still frozen egg rolls for 4 minutes, or until golden brown on the outside and the filling has melted.
Then, let them drain and rest, as instructed, before enjoying.
Do I have to fry them?
Don’t like fried food, or do dietary restrictions keep you from eating or enjoying fried foods?
These egg rolls can also be baked.
Do keep in mind that the texture will be different and they won’t have that same crisp as if fried, but they’re still delightful all the same.
To bake these jalapeno popper egg rolls, lightly oil a rimmed baking sheet.
Place the freshly prepared egg rolls on the pan and then lightly brush them with water.
Bake them at 450 degrees until the tops are golden brown and crisp.
Then, turn the egg rolls over.
Lightly brush them again with water, and continue to bake until the tops are golden brown.
Remove them from the oven, let them rest, and enjoy!
Tips and Tricks
- Use a cooking thermometer to make sure the oil is the right temperature.
- Don’t overcrowd the pot while you are frying the egg rolls.
- Make sure you let them rest while before you enjoy them so the filling has a chance to set a bit.
