Ingredients

  • 1 14 oz loaf French bread
  • 1 lb sweet Italian sausage
  • 1/2 medium white onion peeled & diced
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 cup fresh baby spinach coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup Alfredo sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the sausage with the onions. Add in the garlic when it’s almost completely cooked. Drain and return the meat to the skillet.
1 lb sweet Italian sausage, 1/2 medium white onion, 1 clove garlic
  • While the sausage is cooking, slice the loaf of bread in half horizontally, and tear out the soft bread in the middle. Rip it into small pieces and place it on a plate or a bowl, and set aside. Place the bottom half of the loaf on a baking sheet.
1 14 oz loaf French bread
  • When the sausage is cooked through, add in the spinach and cook, stirring occasionally, until the spinach is wilted, about 1-2 minutes. Stir in the sauce and slow the meat mixture to heat through.
1 cup fresh baby spinach, 1 cup Alfredo sauce
  • Add the torn bread bits to the meat mixture and stir it all together. Spread this mixture out evenly in the bottom half of the loaf/trough, evenly sprinkle the shredded cheese overtop, and then cap the sandwich off with the top half of the bread.
    1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Remove the sandwich from the oven, and let it ‘rest’ for 5 minutes before slicing and serving, so that the meat and cheese ‘set’ and don’t just ooze on out.

Notes

  • Don't just slice into the bread right away. The filling needs a chance to rest so it can set up some after coming out of the hot oven. This resting time prevents the filling from running out of the bread.
  • You could substitute mild or spicy Italian sausage if you and your family prefer.
  • Parmesan cheese would be a delicious addition to this.
