Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp seasoning salt divided
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp Montreal Steak seasoning
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup finely diced onion
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp cooking sherry

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, pepper, salt, onion powder, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and steak seasoning. Form into 8 balls, and flatten into patties.
1 lb ground beef, 1 egg, 1/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs, 1/8 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp seasoning salt, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 2 tsp minced garlic, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 tsp Montreal Steak seasoning
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the patties and onion in the oil until patties are nicely browned, about 4 minutes per side. Remove the beef patties to a plate, and keep warm.
1 tbsp olive oil, 1 cup finely diced onion
  • Sprinkle flour over the onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir in flour with a fork, scraping bits of beef off of the bottom as you stir. Gradually mix in the beef broth and sherry. Season with seasoned salt.
2 tbsp all-purpose flour, 1 cup beef broth, 1 tbsp cooking sherry
  • Simmer and stir over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, until the gravy thickens. Turn heat to low, return patties to the gravy, cover, and simmer for another 15 minutes.
  • Serve the patties on plates with gravy and onions spooned over top. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Try not to disturb the patties while they are frying on each side before flipping them. You want the meat to caramelize.
  • The trick to good gravy? Stir, stir, stir! And add the broth slowly, stirring the whole time you add it so it incorporates well.
  • Don't want to use sherry? You can skip it and just add a little more beef broth. You could also substitute a sweeter red wine for the sherry if you prefer.
