How To Make Homemade Flour Tortillas

Learn how to make homemade flour tortilla and make taco night extra special! With just a few ingredients, you can have fresh, warm tortillas for all of your favorites.

Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • ¼ cup canola or vegetable oil

Instructions

  • In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Create a well in the center of the flour mixture, then pour the water and oil into the bowl.

  • Mix until a thick dough has formed, then transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead until it comes together into a smooth ball.
  • Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each into a ball. Allow the dough to rest for 10 minutes.
  • Heat a heavy bottom skillet over medium heat.
  • Lightly flour each dough ball and then roll into a circle, as thin as you can make it, between two layers of parchment.
  • Peel the parchment from the tortilla and then transfer to the skillet, cooking until you see bubbles on the surface, about 1-2 minutes. Flip and cook an additional 1-2 minutes, or until puffed up.
  • Place on a clean kitchen towel and fold it over to keep warm while you prepare the remaining tortillas.

Notes

  • You can use a tortilla press instead of a rolling pin to save yourself some elbow grease and get your tortillas nice and thin.
  • Make sure to let the dough rest before you roll it out. This gives the gluten in the tortillas a chance to relax a little so the tortillas will be softer and easier to roll.
  • Covering them is a must! It keeps the tortillas nice and soft.
