How To Make Homemade Dog Food (Slow Cooker Recipe)

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 lb beef liver chopped (optional)
  • 2 large sweet potatoes peeled & diced
  • 12 oz fresh green beans chopped
  • 3 oz matchstick carrots
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup chopped fresh spinach can substitute frozen
  • 3 cups uncooked brown rice
  • 3 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried ground sage
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
  • extra virgin olive oil optional, but recommended

Instructions

  • Drizzle a bit of olive oil in the bottom of the bowl of your slow cooker, to prevent sticking.
  • Add all of the ingredients to the bowl of the slow cooker and give it a good stir to evenly combine, but being careful not to mash them up.
    2 lbs ground beef, 1 lb beef liver, 2 large sweet potatoes, 12 oz fresh green beans, 3 oz matchstick carrots, 1 cup frozen peas, 1 cup chopped fresh spinach, 3 cups uncooked brown rice, 3 1/2 cups beef broth, 1 tsp ground turmeric, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1/2 tsp dried ground sage, 1 tsp dried rosemary, extra virgin olive oil
  • Cover and cook on LOW for 6 hours, or on HIGH for 4-5 hours, stirring a couple of times during the cook time.
  • Uncover and stir everything together well, then turn off the slow cooker and allow the mixture to cool completely.
  • Serve in 1 cup portions.

Notes

  • If you are skipping the beef liver, you can add another pound of ground beef instead.
  • Don't serve the food hotter than slightly warmer than room temperature (80-90 degrees F). If you serve it too hot, it could burn your dog's mouth.
  • Make sure you consult a veterinian before making any changes to your dog's diet and follow their advice.
