Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¼ cup flour
  • cup cocoa powder
  • 2 ¼ cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a large saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, and cocoa powder
  • Slowly add the milk, whisking well to ensure no lumps
  • Place mixture over medium heat and whisk frequently to avoid sticking and burning
  • Once mixture starts to steam, whisk constantly to make sure no lumps are formed and continue whisking until bubbling and thickened
  • Remove from heat, and stir in the butter and vanilla extract
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving

Notes

  • When in doubt, whisk! The more you whisk the less likely the gravy will get lumpy.
  • Don't turn the stove up past medium. You don't want to scorch the gravy.
  • The gravy will thicken slightly as it cools.
