- 1 cup sugar
- ¼ cup flour
- ⅓ cup cocoa powder
- 2 ¼ cups milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
In a large saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, and cocoa powder
Slowly add the milk, whisking well to ensure no lumps
Place mixture over medium heat and whisk frequently to avoid sticking and burning
Once mixture starts to steam, whisk constantly to make sure no lumps are formed and continue whisking until bubbling and thickened
Remove from heat, and stir in the butter and vanilla extract
Allow to cool slightly before serving
- When in doubt, whisk! The more you whisk the less likely the gravy will get lumpy.
- Don't turn the stove up past medium. You don't want to scorch the gravy.
- The gravy will thicken slightly as it cools.
