Simple desserts are often overlooked, especially when the Holidays roll around. These apple pie taquitos have all the makings of a great apple pie in fun, crispy cinnamon & sugar coated taquito form.
I can’t think of anything more American to devour on Thanksgiving than an ooey-gooey heap of caramelized apples stuffed into a crispy, buttery crust.
A good apple pie can be oh-so-good, but a bad one, well, it’s just flat out depressing.
Unfortunately a lot can go wrong when it comes to the classic dessert, and I’ve yet to find/perfect a solid pie crust recipe.
But the sons and I have found a way to still get our festive fix.
All the makings of a great apple pie, in a fun finger food shape.
Apple Pie Taquitos.
It’s genius!
Everything we love about hot apple pie, but so much easier to throw together.
It’s easy enough for me when pressed for time, which let’s be honest I often am when hosting, especially when it comes to desserts.
Plus, it’s so simple the kids enjoy helping make this as much as they love eating it!
Ingredients Needed
- apple pie filling
- tortillas
- butter
- sugar
- cinnamon
- caramel syrup
That’s it!
As promised, a very short & simple ingredient list.
That’s all that stands between you and a batch of these sinfully sweet apple pie taquitos.
Ok, well almost.
There is a teensy bit of prep work & baking involved.
I promise it’s just as easy though.
How To Assemble Dessert Taquitos
Making these taquitos are easy enough for one person, but they also work great and come together quickly with a little prep- assembly line style.
Start by adding the cinnamon & sugar to a large flat plate. Use a fork to stir them gently together, carefully so they combine without spilling.
Set the plate aside while you prepare the taquitos.
Empty the can of apple pie filling out onto a clean cutting board.
Using a shark knife, carefully chop the apples into bite-sized pieces.
Lay out a tortilla flat.
We used medium, soft taco sized flour tortillas.
To the tortilla add a line of the chopped apple pie filling, roughly 3 tablespoons or so.
Tightly roll the tortilla up, like a jelly roll.
Use a pastry brush to lightly brush the outside of the rolled taquito with melted butter, and then roll it in the cinnamon sugar mixture until the outside’s evenly coated.
Set the tortilla, seam side down, in a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Repeat until all the remaining tortillas are filled and prepped.
Bake the apple pie taquitos at 350 degrees for 15 minutes, or until the taquitos have crisped and turned golden brown on top.
Serve the warm taquitos with a generous drizzle of caramel syrup.
Tips & Tricks
- Make sure you’re using flour tortillas, NOT corn tortillas. Only flour tortillas will work with this dessert-style recipe.
- You can substitute homemade apple pie filling for the canned version, if desired.
- The taquitos are great when made and served as instructed, but we love topping the warm taquitos with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a really tasty treat.
This apple pie taquitos recipe is just plain fun.
And the sons and I are all about some fun.
Serve em up warm from the oven with a drizzle of caramel syrup and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious dessert you’ll really be thankful for!
