To all my regular readers and followers this is not news, but if you’re new here (HI!! we hope you come back to visit often) I’ll let you in on a well-known fact: I am NOT a morning person. At All. I make no secret of this, and my family knows it well. Do not approach me (period) if the coffee has not been brewed. When my cup’s half gone, you may proceed with caution. Nope, scratch that, I’m headed to the bathroom. When only the dregs are left I bear a striking resemblance to something that passes for human and the Mom you know and love. You still may want to tread carefully for another 15 minutes or so though.
Did you know there’s a right and a wrong way to peel bananas? I did not. There I was in my happy little banana-lovin’ world, just peeling them from the stem. And you know the peel I’m talking about … that long, slow sexy peel where you’re ogling it and making eyes and your brain is filled with visions of sugared banana and just how darn good it’s going to taste in your big bowl of honey flavored cereal. Yeah, that look. And in pops a kid, “Mom, you know you’re doing that wrong, right?”
My family loves a good grab and go breakfast. A muffin fits right into that category, and into their small, yet capable hands. Something else they love? A snack to tide them over until dinner. Oh, the snacks. Luckily, a healthy, hearty muffin fits in there too. And with all these lean, lanky growing boys with limbs akimbo, a go-to muffin mix is something I make sure to keep on hand in the pantry
Do your kids get up at the crack of dawn on special holidays and *try* to tip toe through the kitchen and *secretly* make you a 5 star breakfast that they then lovingly hand deliver to your bed side (dribbles of milk going over the side every other step or so)? Yours too?? For years it was cold bowls of cereal or plain peices of toast that then left crumbs all over my covers, but I couldn’t help smiling through every bite. As they got older, it graduated to scrambled eggs, even pancakes, and I thought I was in heaven, breaking my fast with a meal fit for a Queen (and one that created less mess was an added bonus 🙂 ). And then the older sons got even older, and under years of my diligent, often forced tutelage, they got really good at improving upon the classics. Like pancakes for example. Red Velvet Pancakes. With
Glaze Frosting. Because why wouldn’t I want that hand delivered to me for breakfast any day of the year? Crumbs on the coverlet be damned!
I’m sure when you think of breakfast, or brunch for that matter, there are certain foods that obviously spring to mind. Like eggs. Or sausage. Or even potatoes (home-fries or hash browns anyone?). For us, as I’m sure for a lot of our readers too, these have almost become synonymous with the meal itself.
I can’t believe Christmas is only a week away. It never ceases to amaze me how fast a year goes by the older I get. And while I may have perfected my Masters in Procrastination over the years, gift buying is always an exception. I’m usually done with everything, except stocking stuffers, before the school year starts. And while I may *have* all the gifts hidden in sneaky little spots, that I can only hope I remember all of, it’s still the week before Christmas and I haven’t wrapped a single thing. Ya know what? It’s all going to work itself out, and every darn thing will get wrapped and placed perfectly under the tree, even if it’s not until 3am Christmas morning.
